MOMENUntÍl recently, the parasites responsible forhuman and domestic animal infection relâtedto American cutaneous Leishmaniasis, 'were re-garded as belonging to only one species Leish.mania braziliensis braziliensis VIANNA, 1911.However, working at "Vale do Ribeira" inthe State of Sáo Paulo - Brazil, where thevector of cutaneous leishmaniasis, as \¡¡ell ashuman and dog cases are present, we have iden-tified for the first time in this region, four "iso-lates" of human cases and one of â domesticdog classified as Leishmania mexicana mexica.na by both biological and biochemical charac-terization.'When these parasites are inoculated inhamsters, lesions present numerous parasites.They are large in size and the isolates fromexuberant histioqytomes, grov¿ easily in culturemedia. The parasites are also adequately dis-tinguished by.six enzyme profiles in electropho-resis in agarose: aspartate aminotransferase (E.C.2.6.1.1); alanine aminotransferase (E,C.2.6.1.2.) ; malate dehydrogenase (E.C.1.1.1.37) ; gluco-se-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (E.C.1.1.1.49);Phosphoglucomutase (E.C.2.?.5.1.); and glucosephosphate isomerase (8.C.5 3.1.9).The biological characterization of thesestrains allowed us to include them in the "me-UDC 616.993 .162xicana complex", and the biochemical data inthe subspecies Leishmania mexicana mexicana.The existence of L. m. mexicana in Brazil- both in human cases and a dog - amplifiedthe geographical distribution of this agent inthe New World.RESUMOIdentificação de Leishmania mexicana mexica-na no Estado de São Paulo - BrasilFoi identificado pela primeira vez a pre-sença de L. rnexicana mexicana no Estado deSão Paulo - VaIe do Ribeira, a partir de casoshumanos e de cão doméstico, através da carac-terizaçáo biológica (in vivo e in viúro) e bio-química (enzimas).ACKNOIVLEDGMENT'We are very much indebted to Dr. A.C.
