As orações introduzidas pelo conector quando e seu papel na emergência de relações retóricas em reportagens

Abstract

This article presents a study of adverbial clauses introduced by the connector quando (when) in printed news articles in Brazilian Portuguese. The aim is to investigate the role of these clauses in the emergency of rhetorical relations. Within the assumptions of Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST), we have come to the conclusion that the articulation of clauses by quando is rather complex in news articles. In this genre, most adverbial clauses introduced by that connector allow for the emergence of more than one rhetorical relation. Thus, these clauses help the journalist express that, from his/her point of view, the events represented are combined in a very complex way. Rarely are they organized according to a simple temporal, causal or conditional relation. Most frequently, the events expressed in the adverbial clause and in the nuclear clause establish overlapping rhetorical relations between them.Keywords: connector quando, news articles, Rhetorical Structure of Theory (RST).Este artigo apresenta um estudo das orações adverbiais introduzidas, em português, pelo conector quando presentes em reportagens. O objetivo é investigar a atuação dessas orações na emergência de relações retóricas. Com base nos postulados da Teoria da Estrutura Retórica (Rhetorical Structure Theory - RST), constatou-se que, em reportagens, a articulação de orações pelo quando é bastante complexa. Nesse gênero, a maior parte das orações adverbiais introduzidas por esse conector possibilita a emergência de mais de uma relação retórica. Assim, essas orações ajudam o jornalista a expressar que, do seu ponto de vista, os eventos representados se combinam de modo bastante complexo, raramente havendo entre eles apenas uma relação de natureza temporal, causal ou condicional. Na maior parte dos casos, os eventos expressos na oração adverbial e na oração nuclear estabelecem entre si diferentes relações retóricas sobrepostas.Palavras-chave: conector quando, reportagens, Teoria da Estrutura Retórica (RST)
