Based on the specific case study of catholic and evangelic Brazilian immigrants, living
in the Brasilândia quarter, in Seixal’s municipality, this dissertation aims at contributing
to the research about religious experiences in migratory context. Its main purposes are:
on one hand, to understand how people experience religion in their daily lives and
whether that religious experience was altered as a consequence of migration as well as
to ascertain whether religion is conceived by immigrants as an answer to migratory
adversities. On the other hand, to understand the role played by the two churches that
gather the majority of the quarter’s residents (Catholic church through Amora’s parish
and the Evangelic church Associação Missionária de Alcance Internacional) in the
immigrants’ reception and also how church participation can contribute to the
immigrants’ social and cultural integration in Portugal. We try to demonstrate that the
different catholic and evangelic religious experience, is revaluated, revalorized and
reinterpreted in the light of new meanings and directions and must be understood
according to certain aspects, such as the meaning of religious community and its ethnic
composition in the receiving country, the social, cultural and ritual differences in
religious contexts and the organizational structure of the two churches
