IDRC GRANT / SUBVENTION DU CRDI : - BUILDING A COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE FOR HEALTHY FOOD SYSTEMS IN LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN  www.interamericanheart.org • iahf@interamericanheart.org • www.facebook.com/interamericanheart • www.twitter.com/iahfnews  COLANSA – Web-based library of documents    Working with IDEC and other COLANSA coordinating team project partners, the IAHF has created a dynamic and interactive web-based library of documents (https://interamericanheart.org/knowledge-base/ )to support and enhance the Communities of Practice program and serve as a reference both within, and outside of, the project.  Together with IDRC and COLANSA coordinating team members, we decided that the library and database of documents would focus on front of package labelling (FOPL) documents primarily from Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) countries and for the use of LAC users as well.  We classified the articles in terms of type of document and other associated tags and prioritized documents from the LAC region.   Documents In addition to the documents on FOPL, the library also contains copies of the main FOPL legislation in different LAC countries to serve as an example for others who are in the process of advancing their own policies.  The IAHF and project partners identified documents for the library.  Working with a consultant, the documents were reviewed, and multiple keywords (tags) were created for each document that can be used in the document search function.  The IAHF contracted with Mr. Agustín Carnikian, M.Sc. to identify the documents to be included in the repository and determine the appropriate tags that would be associated with each document to facilitate document searches (in both English and Spanish). Also, a small summary covering the content for the reader, was generated for each document (in both English and Spanish as well).  Mr. Carnikian also ensured that the documents in the library represent the region.   Platform A cursory search of the internet revealed a number of platforms that could have been used for the repository, some more sophisticated than others.  The number of features that a particular platform had (searchability, interactive chat, etc.) was directly related to the cost of the platform.  Given the amount of funding and time available, the IAHF chose a platform called “Knowledge Base” which is a plugin that is compatible with the IAHF’s website.  In subsequent updates of the library, and in the case that some restricted access may be needed for some documents in the future, different levels of access can be incorporated (i.e. public vs COLANSA members).  However, at present, the library of documents is open to anyone that has the hyperlink.   Content The library includes original, internal Information as well as links to other libraries or databases.  We included many documents from our own collection and added more by COLANSA members and by searching and adding the main FOPL legislation and policy documents available. COLANSA members and work from the FOPL hub of COLANSA will likely produce more FOPL documents to add which will be classified, a summary added and uploaded into the library.  www.interamericanheart.org • iahf@interamericanheart.org • www.facebook.com/interamericanheart • www.twitter.com/iahfnews  Web library Experience To find a document, the user will use the search field to search on specific key words; labels, nutrition, legislation, etc.  The search results will either present to the user a document that is housed on an internal server, a link to a document that is part of another website or database, or a link to a video platform in the case of videos or recorded webinars. Direct links to external documents are used whenever possible.  The library is hosted on IAHF’s servers and contains a link to the COLANSA website.  We are working with the COLANSA web designer to have a reciprocal link on the COLANSA website directing individuals to the webpage with the library.  The library currently contains 80+ documents on front of package labelling (FOPL).  A total of 137 subfolders with information were analyzed, with more than 1200 original files reviewed (some included photos). The documents of any kind that were relevant for the library were identified, classified, and uploaded. The library therefore currently includes more than 80 documents (26 advocacy documents, 16 laws and other policy documents, and 39 others).  Additional articles will be added as they become available or when members of COLANSA may refer them to us.   Currently IAHF will continue to house and update the e-library. IAHF is also looking for funding to sustain the e-library and expand its topics especially to give support to new COLANSA hubs generated (industry interference, advocacy and fiscal policy and economics).
