A total of 466 participantsattended the event, representing more than 40countries. The largest delegations originatedfrom Switzerland, Japan, Italy, France, the USA,Germany and Canada, each counting morethan 20 persons. Some 64% of the participantswere professionals and senior academics (fullregistration), and 36% were Master or PhDstudents (student registration). The rate offemale participants was around 25%. The event included, besides the traditionalMaster classes and the Conference on FluvialHydraulics, also Special Sessions on ReservoirSedimentation and on Swiss Competences inRiver Engineering and Restoration. Despite themechanisms of reservoir sedimentation beingwell known for a long time, sustainable andpreventive measures are rarely taken intoconsideration in the design of new reservoirs.Research and development is still urgentlyneeded to identify efficient mitigation measuresadapted to the main sedimentation processesinvolved in reservoirs. Each year the Commission for Flood Protection(KOHS) of the Swiss Association for WaterManagement (SWV) organizes a symposium onriver engineering and restoration. Professionals,officers of public administrations andresearchers exchange their experiences onspecial topics and on-going projects. In 2014this symposium was organized as a specialsession of River Flow 2014. Aside from the 110Swiss participants, mainly practitioners, scien-tists and professionals from all over the worldparticipating at River Flow 2014 were informedabout the Swiss competences in riverengineering and restoration.Confirming the vitality of the fluvial hydraulicscommunity, six master classes were held by 13masters, enrolling 65 students from 15 countries.These were:• Complex 3D flows, directed by André Roy,Koen Blanckaert and Thorsten Stoesser,• Mechanics of sediment transport, directed byFrancesco Ballio and Rui M. L. Ferreira,• River morphology and morphodynamics,directed by Ana Maria Silva and Stuart Lane,• River restoration – link between morphologyand habitats, directed by Lukas Hunzingerand Silke Wieprecht,• Turbulence and mixing processes, directed byVladimir Nikora and Wim Uijttewaal, and• Unsteady flows over fixed and mobile beds,directed by Mustafa Altinakar and SandraSoares-Frazão.Following the master classes, participants andorganizers had the opportunity to continue theirexchanges during a barbecue dinner on EPFLcampus.During the River Flow conference, four keynotelectures were held by experts with anoutstanding international reputation, namely:• River networks as ecological corridors, byProf. Dr. Andrea Rinaldo.• River turbulence: current state, challenges,and prospects, by Prof. Dr. Vladimir Nikora.• Climate forcing of sediment flux in mountainriver systems, by Prof. Dr. Stuart Lane, and• A sediment journey through the BermejoRiver of Argentina and Bolivia: from debrisflows to meandering, ending in washload, byProf. Dr. Marcelo H. García.A technical tour to the ongoing river training andrestoration works of the Upper Rhone River wasorganized with the Service des Routes et desCours d’eau of the Canton of Wallis/Valais onSaturday after the conference, which wasattended by 93 participants. This is the mostimportant river engineering project inSwitzerland, with a total investment of some 1.3Billion Swiss Francs over the next 20 years. Theparticipants had the opportunity to visit severalon-going or recently finished river training andrestoration works in the Upper Rhone valley,which is also a touristic destination. Within thetechnical tour was the visit to the Braided riverRhone stretch “Pfynwald – Bois de Finges”,which is the last fully natural stretch of theRhone River. Scientific contributions to the River Flowconference were numerous. The number of oralpresentations was 324, divided into five parallelsessions with a large audience. HYDRO Exploitation, theIAHRAnton J. Schleissgraduated in CivilEngineering fromETH Zurich,Switzerland, in1978. After joiningthe Laboratory of Hydraulic, Hydrol-ogy and Glaciology (VAW) as a re-search associate and senior assistant,he obtained a Doctorate of TechnicalSciences in 1986. Thereafter, heworked for 11 years for ElectrowattEngineering in Zurich, focusing on thedesign of many hydropower projectsaround the world. Until 1996 he wasHead of the Hydraulic Structures Sec-tion in the Hydropower Department. In1997 he was appointed Full Professorand Director of the Laboratory of Hy-draulic Constructions (LCH) in theCivil Engineering Department of EPFL.In 2012, he was elected Vice-Presidentof ICOLD, and is Chair of the IAHR Europe Regional Division.Giovanni De Cesare, PhD, isa Senior researchassociate and thevice-director of theLaboratory of Hy-draulic Construc-tions (LCH) of EPFL. He is in chargeof the hydraulic laboratory. He hasmore than 20 years of experience inphysical and numerical modelling inall domains of hydraulic structuresand schemes. He is author of morethan 100 scientific papers in peer-re-viewed journals, publications and con-ference proceedings.Mário J. Franca,co-opted memberof the IAHR FluvialHydraulics Com-mittee, graduatedin Civil Engineeringfrom the Technical University of Lis-bon in 1998, and completed his PhD in2005 at the Laboratory of Environmen-tal Hydraulics (EPFL). He joined theLaboratory of Hydraulic Constructions(EPFL) in 2012, where he pursues hisresearch activity in Fluvial Hydraulics.He served in the private sector for theperiods 1998-2002 and 2008-2010,and as Assistant Professor in the Uni-versity of Coimbra (2007-2008) and inthe New University of Lisbon (2010-2012).Michael Pfistergraduated in CivilEngineering fromETH Zurich,Switzerland, in2002. He thenjoined the Labora-tory of Hydraulics, Hydrology andGlaciology (VAW) as a research- andsenior-assistant, and obtained a Doc-torate in Sciences in 2007. In 2010 hejoined the Laboratory of HydraulicConstructions (LCH) of EPFL, as a Re-search and Teaching Associate, con-tinuing his research activity mainly fo-cusing on spillway hydraulics andhigh-speed two-phase air-water flows.He is a member of the IAHR HydraulicStructures Committee.Swiss Federal Office for the Environment(FOEN), and BG Ingénieurs Conseils generouslysponsored the conference.
