The DiRIMmodel has been applied in the Yellow River,especially in the coarse sediment source regionon the loess plateau, and other river basinsincluding the Yarlung Zangbo River, the drainagebasin of the Tangjiashang Barrier Lake, and etc.The Sky River Concept and theProjectBased on meteorological reanalysis data, wefound that highly structured water vaporsediment processes at the river basin scale.With the high-resolution structural digitaldrainage network obtained from Hydro30,integrating sub-models of different sub-processes of the yield and concentration ofrunoff, and the yield and transport of sediment ineach hillslope-channel unit, it provides acomplete system for hydrologic and sedimenttransport simulations in river basins. The DiRIMmodel efficiently solves several problems in theinteraction between datasets and models atdifferent scales, and it increases the efficiency ofcomputation of large-scale river basins by usingGlobal Drainage Network Hydro30The global digital drainage network TsinghuaHydro30, produced by our team, describesimportant spatial information used in hydraulicresearch and public services. Besides theintrinsic characteristics of space and topology,the digital drainage network contains infor-mation useful for hydraulic engineering, environ-mental, ecological and other studies. Extraction,storage, and management of the high resolutiondigital drainage network, however, faces diffi-culties which limit its use. While current softwarefor extracting the drainage network mainly workswith Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data with theamount of data points (pixels) at the millionlevel, our team has adapted a highly scalableand efficient algorithm which can deal withDEMs with the amount of pixels at the ten billionlevel, to make the extraction and coding oflarge-scale drainage networks possible.Combined with auto-detection of channelheadwaters based on geomorphologicalfeatures, the accuracy of the extraction is alsoimproved significantly. By coding and storingthe drainage networks, and developing a hierar-chical retrieval algorithm for large-scalenetworks, the dataset for the main river basins inthe world, which consists of features such as thevector drainage network, its characteristics, andprecipitation data from remote sensing, is estab-lished. The results of this research can offerconvenient data support for wide use of thedigital drainage network in fields like fluvialgeomorphology, water resource management,hydraulic engineering, environmental studies,and GIS. Digital River Basin Integrated ModelThe Digital River basin Integrated Model (DiRIM)focuses on the simulation of runoff andTHE SKY RIVER PROJECT BY GUANGQIAN WANG, JIAHUA WEI, YUEFEI HUANG, XUDONG FU & DEYU ZHONGThe “Sky River Project” is a comprehensive research project initiated by Professor WANG Guangqian,member of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). The project aims at solving the water shortagecrisis in West China by exploiting cloud water resources. Sky River dynamics provides the theoreticalbasis for exploiting atmospheric water resources. Integrated utilization of water resources of both skyrivers and earth surface rivers is proposed. Combinations of traditional and modern artificial weathermodification techniques have been tested. Effects of the different techniques are evaluated throughthe monitoring system. Temporal and spatial impacts of utilization of atmospheric water resourceson the earth surface rivers will be investigated in various spatial regions.Figure 1. The water vapor conveyancesystems have higher vertically integratedtransport flux than their immediate environ-ments, consisting of dominant channels foratmospheric water vapor transfer ranging fromlocal scale to global scale. The water vapor transfer systems in the tropo-sphere providing high water (vapor)conveyance are similar to land surface riversand thus can be referred to as “Rivers in theSky”, or simply “Sky Rivers”. Studies on SkyRivers will help us have a new appreciation ofglobal atmospheric water vapor transfer and abetter understanding of the global water cycle. Figure 2. He is Chief of Digital River BasinModelling of the Sky River Project. Deyu Zhong, professor ofTsinghua University,distinguished professor ofthe Changjiang Scholars ofthe Ministry of Education.His research interests include sedimentmechanics, fluvial processes, flood control. He has improved the sediment dynamictheoretical system by applying two-phase flowtheory to the river management, protection and exploitation. He is Chief of TheoreticalResearch of the Sky River Project.Multi-reservoir      Systems     Operations122 hydrolink number 4/2017Aimed at comprehensively understanding thecurrent ecological status of the high plateauwetlands, team members from the Sky RiverProject have been conducting extensive andsystematic field investigations on the physio-chemical environmental conditions and foodavailability (mainly macroinvertebrates) throughcontinuous monitoring and sampling. On thebasis of the collected data, we have distin-guished four different sorts of patch-scalehabitats in the Sanjiangyuan wetlandsaccording to their environmental conditions,biotic assemblage structures, and trophiccharacteristics. With the help of ecologicalstatistical methods, we have established aninterconnected model of relationships amongthe regional hydrology, the physio-chemicalenvironments, the biotic assemblages, and thetrophic supply. This statistical model canprovide reliable evaluations of the ecologicalhealth and food resources of the current highplateau wetland systems. It can also be used topredict patterns of ecological conditions andchanges in this area under potential humanweather interventions. This environment-biotamodel can be regarded as a specific expansionof the digital watershed model in which theecological influences of the sky river project willbe evaluated based on the responses fromterrestrial and aquatic systems. nBased on this concept and on related researchresults in recent years, the Sky River researchgroup further proposed the concept of the “SkyRiver Project”. The aim of the “Sky River Project”is the joint and coupled utilization ofatmospheric and surface water resources indifferent regions. Specific regions can beselected when the atmospheric water vapordistribution and transport patterns are fullyunderstood. A new ground-based weathermodification technology is being developed andtested for long-term operation at fixed sites. Thevision of the project is to achieve its aim -- thecoupled utilization of water resources in the skyand on the earth surface in the future, bycombining the Sky River theory and techniqueswith the Tsinghua Hydro30 and the DiRIM as itssupports.Responses of high plateau wetlandecosystem to the artificial weatherinterventionsHigh plateau wetlands provide important naturalhabitats in the Sanjiangyuan area with adequatefood resources, as well as comfortable refugefor wildlife species listed in the National KeyProtected Wildlife Species in China, IUCN reddata book and CITES Appendices. In the contextof global climate change, alterations in regionalhydrological conditions have directly and/orindirectly influenced the physical environmentalconditions of these wetland ecosystems, whichhave changed the trophic basis of the food web,and affected every consumption unit withinthese systems.
