CHMY 122: Intro to General Chemistry Lab  Instructor: Kent Sugden Email kent.sugden@umontana.edu Office: CHEM 116 Office Hours: by appointment  Teaching Assistant: Sierra Paske; sierra.paske@umconnect.umt.edu  Course Meeting Time: Mondays, 2:00 – 4:50 pm; Room 401 Chemistry Building This course is an in-person course and cannot be delivered remotely.  Course Description This course is designed to satisfy the chemistry laboratory requirements for the Missoula College nursing program. CHMY 122 introduces general and inorganic laboratory skills and concepts. Students practice careful measurements and observations, develop quantitative relationships between variables, apply patterns determined with known samples to unknown materials, and practice critical thinking skills.   Typically, the labs in this course are completed in partners. Due to COVID-19, we will only be using partners when absolutely necessary. Plan on completing the lab work on your own. You are encouraged to work together with other students when completing the lab reports. Make sure all of your answers are written in your own words.   Pre-requisites and Co-requisites for CHMY 122 • CHMY 121 is a pre-/co-requisite for this course. • Fundamental algebraic skills.  Course Materials  • Safety Goggles, green with elastic strap • Mask  • A lab notebook. Any notebook will do. • Sharpie® felt-tip pen (available in bookstore, not required) • Calculator  Labs Each lab will be posted on Moodle prior to when it will be conducted in lab. A hard copy of the lab will be provided for you at the beginning of that lab. You will not be required to print anything. Lab reports will be due by the end of the lab period.  Our goal is to allow you enough time to get all your lab completed within the three hours of class. However, for complete understanding of the material you may need to work on the labs or study from them outside of class as well. If more time is needed let your instructor know and you may turn it in by the beginning of the next lab period. After that time, lab reports will be considered late and you will receive a zero.     Make-Up Labs and Absences Many people may have last minute emergencies, sicknesses, or other unavoidable circumstances. To help alleviate stress from these situations, your lowest lab score will be dropped. If you need to make up a lab and it is a dry lab, we can discuss the possibility of completing it outside of room CHEM 401. If it is a wet lab, that will be considered your one dropped lab.   Exams 2 lab exams will be given. They will be a mix of short-answer and multiple-choice questions. Exam 1 will cover material from labs conducted between 1/24 and 2/28. Exam 2 will cover material from labs conducted between 3/4 and 4/18.   Lab Schedule    Grading Distribution Lab reports: 80% (Weighted equally, 1 dropped) Exams: 20% (Weighted equally)  To receive an A, you must competently execute labs, demonstrate an understanding of the conceptual material relating to labs, and be able to relate this material to health sciences.
