The use of transgenic and knockout methodologies, stem cell biology, gene cloning andsequencing, and high throughput technology has revolu-tionized medicine. Discovery of families of cytokines andchemokines, novel signaling mechanisms, and of newmediators and inflammatory pathways have led to pivotalinsights into the basis of allergic and immunological dis-eases. This has led to the generation of new treatmentstrategies such as monoclonal antibodies, cytokine inhib-itors, new immunomodulators and gene therapy.At present, there is no journal dedicated specifically toboth the clinical and molecular aspects of allergic dis-eases. In starting Clinical and Molecular Allergy, we hope topresent timely reviews and mechanism-oriented reportsthat will open up new avenues for research and bringtogether research communities from across the globe. Astrong emphasis will be placed on education and timelyreviews of molecular diagnostic technology and molecu-lar biotherapeutics, which will constitute an ever-increas-ing aspect of our existence in the future. Reviews of theseareas will allow clinicians to learn and share their experi-ences and understanding of these advances.Clinical and Molecular Allergy is Open Access meaning it isfreely and universally accessible online, it is archived in atleast one internationally recognized free access repository,and its authors retain copyright, allowing anyone toreproduce or disseminate articles, according to the Bio-Med Central copyright and licence agreement [1]. Clinicaland Molecular Allergy's articles are archived in PubMedCentral [2], the US National Library of Medicine's full-textrepository of life science literature, and also in repositoriesat the University of Potsdam in Germany [3], at INIST inFrance [4] and in e-Depot [5], the National Library of theNetherlands' digital archive of all electronic publications.This will allow scientists and physicians from around theworld to share in the exciting advances. Information willbe disseminated around the world instantly with no costfor access. With the high cost of hard copy journals, a lotof libraries, clinics, and medical schools in many coun-tries are struggling with limited resources to gain access tothe new information. Our Open Access journal may insome small way narrow this information gap. It will alsodecrease the use and waste of paper and help preserve ourenvironment.The Journal has several aspects that will appeal to bothresearchers and clinicians. The Journal's contents includeoriginal articles of clinical studies and bench research,case reports, mini reviews, commentaries and guest edito-rials. Manuscripts that deal with the clinical and molecu-lar basis of allergic disease will remain the major focus forthis Journal.
