Inorganic - chemical treatment.2. Organic - Biochemical treatment.The basic reaction in the biochemical operation is:Organic waste + living microorganisms + Oxygen →C02 + H20 + more organismsThis reaction can be carried out in different reactors andthe processes are classified as:• Aerobic digestion.• Activated sludge process.• Anaerobic digestion.• Trickling filters.• Rotating Biological Contactor.• Biofilter.In addition to all these methods dissolved air flotationis also used for oil water separation.Rotating biological contactor(The paper emphasises more on last two methods as theremaining are four methods well known).It consists of closely spaced discs mounted on a com-mon horizontal shaft, partially submerged in a semicircular tank receiving waste water. When water contain-ing organic waste and nutrients flow through the reactor,mirco organisms consume the substrata and grow at-tached to the disc. The rotating action imparts a shearforce to the biofilm, keeping the thickness relatively con-stant. The rotation of the discs also mixes the liquid whichkeeps the stripped biomass in suspension and allows it tobe carried from the reactor by the efficient.Aeration of the culture is accomplished by two mecha-nisms:• As a point on the discs rises above the liquid surface  athin film of liquid remains attached to it and oxygen istransferred to the film as it passes through air.• Some amount of air is entrained by the bulk of liquiddue to turbulence caused by rotation of discs.The essential features of the unit are:• The main shaft of sufficient rigidity on which circulardiscs are mounted. The discs could be of asbestos,cement sheets, PVC sheets. etc.• A tank in which discs are half submerged in the wastewater.• A driving mechanism consisting of a motor and re-duction gear.BiofilterBiofilter is a fixed film biological reactor where the micro-bial growth takes place on a fixed rigid media like stoneor plastic.The influent wastewater is fed to the top of the biofilterwhere the reaction driven rotating distributor evenlydistributes the wastewater over the plastic media withinthe biofilter. As the wastewater percolates down over themedia, the biological population growing on the mediasurface absorb the soluble and particulate biodegradableorganic material converting it into either cellular matteror respiration products (C02 and H20).The cellular matter periodically sheds or sloughs fromthe media and passes out of the biofilters.Biofilter ventilationDue to a highly biodegradable nature of wastewater, it ispossible that small pockets of anaerobic biomass mayperiodically occur within the aerobic biofilter. The pres-ence of these bacteria may result in the production ofodorous gasses such as H2S. The biofilter is thereforesometimes covered and ventilated using fans. This ar-rangement also enables exhaust gases to be scrubbed in asmall chemical scrubber, hence, eliminating the possibili-ties of odour around the waste water treatment plant.Air distributionAir distribution is a critical design features and an impor-tant factor in biofilter performance. The amount of airflow is not as significant as the requirement for positiveand constant flow throughout the media. The designvelocity of air through the biofilter will vary dependingon the media characteristics, the biofilter configuration(particularly) the design and type of the support system)and its operational density. A velocity range of between0.2 to 0.4m/min, with a typical design parameter of 0.3m/min, would normally be adequate as long as thedistribution is satisfactory with no stagnant areas. Each packing has its own performance character-istics and hence the biofilter performance depends uponthe packing used.Dissolved air flotationFlotation systems can be used to treat most effluentsespecially those containing suspended solids, metal hy-droxides, proteinous material (particulate or dissolved),fat or oil. Each system is designed to meet the specificrequirements of the particular operation. The design of aspecific system depends upon the factors such as thevolume of wastewater to be treated the degree and natureof contamination, the extent of treatment required, andany subsequent treatment that is required for the recov-ered product concentrate.Basis of flotationIf the gas bubble is attached to a particle of suspendedmatter, a composite particle is created which is lighterthan water and will therefore float to the surface. There-fore, it becomes essential that all the suspended particlesshould be attached to gas bubbles so that they all float outof the bulk liquid.Introduction of bubbles depends largely on the mass ofgas introduced. But the mass as such is not important inthis application. We are interested in the number ofbubbles in order to get the largest possible number ofthem for a given mass of gas. Small bubbles have theadditional advantage that their terminal velocity is small.In dissolved air flotation (DAF), air is fed into thesludge flow under pressure resulting in a large amount ofair dissolved in the flow. Air either adheres to or isabsorbed by the solid particles when the sludge flowenters the DAF tank at atmospheric pressure, the air isreleased from solution as small air bubbles, attached tothe solid particles and floats to the surface. The sludgeforms a layer at the top of the tank and is removed by askimmer to further sludge processing.The method used is recycle pressurisation. Part ofeffluent flow is pumped to a retention tank under pres-sure (5 to 7 bar). Air is fed into high pressure retentiontank at a controlled rate. The recycle flow becomessupersaturated with air which is then mixed into flotationtank. Sludge solids are floated to the surface to form asludge blanket and the clarified effluent is drawn-offroughly halfway up the tank depth using a sparge pipespanning the full width of the tank. Thickened sludge isremoved by a skimmer.The actual amount of air dissolved is determined byfour basic variables, pressure in the system, temp of theliquid in the system, gas composite at the air liquidinterface in the pressurisation vessel and the method usedto dissolve air in the system.Equipment consists of:• DAF float tankE   WASTEWATER AND ITS TREATMENT: TELANG250• Air saturation system• DAF recycle pump (for recycle pressurisation system)• Air compressor or source of high pressure air• Rapid mix and/or flocculator tanks that are separateor part of the DAF tanks.Design procedureDesign parameters• Recycle ratio.• Air consumption.• Flotation unit.• High pressure tank.Recycle ratio15-20 per cent of inlet system. A bottommounted scraper may also be fitted to clean the floor of theflotation tank. (If the specific gravity of the particular isgreater than 1.2). Scrapers are normally controlled by On/off timers. These times should be adjusted to give themaximum solids content of the sludge i.e. increase off timeto allow solids to increase. This is very important whendewatering/thickening activated sludge.Feed pumpsProgressive cavity pumps provide constant volumetric flowrate regardless of fluctuations in suction head. This advan-tage helps to maintain a constant level in the flotation tank.The volumetric flow rates of centrifugal pumps vary withsuction heads. Hence it is very difficult to determine theoptimum height of the outflow, bellmouth, control to achievethe correct operational level for the flotation tank.
