Rice bran is a sink for edible oil with many benefits to human health. It consists mainly of the aleurone layer and the embryo, therefore, rice breeders try to develop new variety with thick aleurone layer and/or giant embryo for increasing the amount of rice bran for oil production. The field study was conducted to evaluate the grain yield formation, embryo size and lipid content of three promising rice giant embryo lines (MGE13–23–2–1, MGE13–24–3–4 and MGE13–27–2–3) and the genetic background variety (Mizuhochikara) under environmentally different conditions including two cropping seasons (spring and autumn) and two locations (Hanoi and Laocai) in Northern Vietnam. The results showed that grain yield and related parameters could be varied under specific environmental conditions. All giant embryo lines performed higher grain yield due to larger biomass accumulation than Mizuhochikara did at Laocai in spring cropping season, in which, abundant daily sunny hours would be the most important environmental factor causing for high productivity of giant embryo lines. However, all giant embryo lines showed stability in most parameters related to the embryo size and lipid content in rice bran under different environments in Northern Vietnam. Line MGE13–27–2–3 exhibited the highest grain yield and lipid content and offered the best promise for rice bran oil production
