The Cultural Atlas of Australia (CAA) is a digital geohumanities project that is the first of its kind to digitally map representations of iconic landscapes and locations across Australian films, novels, and plays. The project was funded by an an ARC Discovery grant (DP110100309) from 2011–2013, and comprises a digital map and associated dataset.  The CAA digital map plots the narrative and filming locations of more than 150 films, novels, and plays that are set in Australia or that strongly feature Australian locations and landscapes. By geovisualising these narrative representations of Australian space and place, the CAA reveals new patterns of spatial representation across these cultural forms (e.g., emerging regional tropes, clusters of representation, or gaps in representation) and across time. Aimed at a range of users, including students, cultural tourists, and academic researchers, the CAA visualizes new perspectives on, intersections between, and layerings of geography and narrative in the Australian context.
