Turks in Germany: Analyzing the Voting Behavior of Germany's Largest Minority

Abstract

As of 2021, it is estimated that nearly 3 million people of Turkish descent live in Germany—approximately 3.6% of the population, making it the largest minority group in the country. Of the 3 million, it is estimated that 1.2 million are eligible to vote—making up roughly 2% of Germany’s voters and more than enough to sway a national election. This thesis looks to understand how German Turks are voting in German elections and what factors are influencing their behavior. This thesis finds that the two most influential factors in determining vote decision for Turkish Germans are: their occupational and income status group and politician's attention to issues concerning racial, ethnic, and religious minority groups.Bachelor of Art
