The first class wasreceived on the ninth of September, 1840, and the whole number of students hasbeen sixteen hundred and eighteen; of these, one thousand and sixteen havecompleted the prescribed course of study, and received certificates or diplomas.TERMS AND VACATIO "S.THE SCHOOL-YEAR is divided into two Terms, - each containing nineteenweeks of study, with a week's recess near the middle of the Term. The FallTerm is preceded by a vacation of eight weeks, and the spring Term by a vacationof four weeks.The ncxt FALL TERM will commence T'ttCsday, Septembe1'8; 1868; and close Tuesday, Janum'y 26, :1869.The present Term will close on TUESDAY, July 14, 18G8, with publicexercises of Examination and Graduation, commencing at 9± o'clock, A.~r.CONDITIONS OF ADMISSION.Gentlemen applying for admission must be at least seventeen years of age;ladies, sixteen. Candidates must make an explicit declaration of their intentionto become teachers in the Schools of Massachusetts; must present a satisfactorycertificate of good moral character; must declare their full intention of faithfullyobserving the regulations of the School while members of it; and must pass asatisfactory examination in Reading, Spelling, Writing, Arithmetic, Geography,the History of the United States, and English Grammar. A greater age than ishere prescribed, with some experience in teaching, will make the course ofinstruction in the School much more valuable to the pupil.The examination for admission takes place on TUESDAY, the first day of eachTerm, beginning at 9 o'clock, A.~[. Except in extraordinary cases, no one willbe examined later in the term.6 B1'idgewate1' Normal School.DESIGN OF TI-IE SCHOOL.,The design of the Normal School is strictly professional; that is, to prepare,in the best possible manner, the pupils for the work of organizing, governing,and instructing the public schools of the Commonwealth.To this end there must be the most thorough knowledge: jil'st, of the branchesof learning required to be taught in the schools; and, second, of the best methodsof teaching those branches.COURSE OF STUDY.The ti'rne of the course extends through a period of two years, and is dividedinto Terms of twenty weeks each, with daily sessions of not lcss than fivc hours,five da.ys cach week.BRANCHES OF STUDY.The regular coursc of study includes the following branches. They are givenwithout reference to the order in which they are pursued, or the length of timcdevoted to them: -FIRST. - English Grammar and Analysis; Arithmctic; Geography, Physicaland Political, with the use of Globes and Map-drawing; History of United States,Algebra; Vocal Music; Drawing; Physiology and Hygienc ; which are prcscribedby law for all the Public Schools of the State.SECOND. - Geometry, Natural Philosophy, Chemistry, Astronomy, Botany,and Zoology, Mineralogy, and Geology, Book-keeping, thc Civil Polity ofMassachusetts and the United States, Rhetoric, and English Literature; which,with the exception of the last, are prescribed by law for the High Schools of thcState; and a knowledge of their elements, at least, is deemed essential to acompetent preparation for teaching in all the Public Schools.TIIIRD. - Mental and Moral Science, Theory and Art of Teaching, includingPrinciples and Methods of Instruction, School Organization and Government,School Laws of Massachusetts, and Teaching Exercises.In connection with the foregoing, constant and careful attention to be giventhroughout the course to Drawing and delineations on the black-board; Music;Spelling, with derivations and definitions; Reading, including analysis of sounds:md vocal gymnastics; and Writing.The Latin and French languages may be pursued as optional studies, but 110tto the neglect of the English course.General Exercises in Composition, Gymnastics, Object Lcssons, &c., to beconductcd in such ll, manner and at such times as the Principal shall deem best.Lecturcs on the differcnt branches pnrsued, and on rclatcd topics, to be givcnby gentlcmen from abroad, as the Board or the Visitors shall direct, and also bythe teachcrs and more advanced scholars,Ci1'cular, 1868. 7Pupils who have successfully completed the prescribed course of study, reccil'ethe regular Diploma of the Instit\ltion.EXAMINATIONS.A public examination is held at the close of each Term under the direction ofthe Board of Visitors.The School is at all times open to inspection, and the friends of education areinvited to visit it at their convenience.EMPLOYMENT OF GRADUATES.The Gra<luates of the School readily find employment in teaching. The num-ber of applications for teachers received the past year is many times the numberof graduates. A large number of these applications have been for .. Graduatesof successful experience," to take charge of Annual Schools, with a good salary.LIBRARY, APPARATUS, AND CABINET.The Institution has, besides the supply of text-books upon the different branchesof the course of study, a valuable LIBRARY of works for general reference andreading, to which the pupils have access without charge. It is also supplied withApPARATUS for the illustration of the more important principles in naturalPhilosophy, Chemistry, Astronomy, and Physiology; and has the foundation of agood CA.BINET of minerals and geological specimens.Valuable donations, from various sources, have been received during the pastyear. Further additions, of books for the Library, of chemical and philosophicalapparatus, of minerals, plants, animals, and other specimens of natural history,will be made as frequently as the funds of the school, or the donations of itsfriends, will permit.EXPENSES.TUITION IS FREE to all who comply with the condition of teaching in theSchools of Massachusetts, wherever they may have previously resided. Pupilswho fail to comply with this condition are charged a reasonable sum for tuition.A fee of $2.00 is paid by each pupil, at the beginning of the Term, to meetincidental expenses.BOA.RDING. Board is obtained in private families. The price, the presentterm, is $4.00 a week; washing, fuel, and lights are a separate charge.A club is established which enables Gentlemen to board at cost; at present thecost of the table is $2.50 a week.Students also board themselves. The rent of rooms in private houses is $1.00a week, which, in some instances, includes furniture and bedding; in others, onlyfurniture. The average expense for room rent, fuel, and lights, is $0.80 a weekfor the school-year, estimated on the supposition that two students occupy thesame room.8 B1'idgewate1' N01'mal School.rupils living on the line of the railJad, and wishing to boarll at home, canobtain tickets for the term at on'e hulf the usual rate.TEXT-BoOKS. Most of the text-books required are furnisltell to the stullent,without charge, from the School Library. Each pupil will neell u Bible. It isalso recommended that the pupils should bring with them, for the purpose ofreference, such text-books as they may have.PECUNIARY AID.For the assistunce of those students who are unable to meet the expenses of acourse of instruction in the School, the State makes an annuul appropriation ofone thousand dollars. One-half of this sum is distributed, ut the close of eachTerm, among deserving pupils from Mussachusetts. This aid is not furnishellduring the first thirteen weeks of attendance, unless the pupil enters prepurcd tocomplete the prescribed course of study in less than two years. After that time,those who reside not more than twenty miles from the School, receive fifty centsper week; those residing between twenty and thirty miles, one dollur per week;and those more than thirty miles, one dJllar and fifty cents per week.Applications for this aid are reC[uired to be made to the Principal, in writing,stating the reason, and giving good reference.'.fills aid is furnished to those only who remain and complete the prescribedcourse of study, the first three terms of which must be consecutive. rupils whofail to comply with tills condition arc expected to refund any amount they mayhave received. It was established by theCommonwealth, with the co-operation of the citizens of Bridgewater, andthe first class was received September 9, 1840. Except in extraordinary cases, noone will be examined later in the term.DESIGN OF THE SCHOOL.The design of the Normal School is strictly professional; that is, to pre-pare, in the best possible manner, the pupils for the work of organizing,goveming, and instructing the public schools of the Commonwealth.To this end there must be the most thorough knowledge: }il'st, of thebranches of learning required to be taught in the schools; and, second, of thebest methods of teaching those branches.* Persons intending to teach in other States, or in private schools, may be udmited by, pay-ing fifteen dollars a term for tuition .•8 S'l'A'rE NORMAL SCHOOL.The primary object is to train the pupils to the habit of clear and sys-tematic thinking and speaking, to give them such command of themselvesthat they can educate others.COURSE OF STUDY.The Board of Education, by a vote passed January 9, 1866, prescrihed thefollowing course of study for the State Normal Schools:-" The time of the course extends through a period of two years, and isdivided into terms of twenty weeks each, with daily sessions of not lessthan five honrs five days each week.BRANCHES OF STUDIES TO BE PURSUED.First Tel"Yn.1. The Civil Polity of Massachusetts and the United States.STATE NORM,AL SCHOOL. 9In connection with the foregoing, constant and careful attention to begiven throughout the course to drawing and delineations on the black-board; music; spell.ing, with derivations and definitions; reading, includinganalysis of sounds and vocal gymnastics; and writing.The Latin and French languages may be pursued as optional studies, butnot to the neglect of the English course.General exercises in composition, gymnastics, object lessons, etc., to beconducted in such a manner and at such times as the Principal shall deembest.Lectures on the different branches pursued, and on related topics, to begiven by gentlemen from abroad, as the Board of the Visitors shall direct, andalso by the teachers and more advanced scholars.The order of the studies in the course may be varied in special cases, withthe approval of the Visitors,"ADVANCED COURSE OF STUDY.The Board of Education on February 3d, 1869, voted, "that a supple-mental course of study, occupying two years, be introduced into each of thefour Normal Schools, which shall comprise the Latin, French, Higher Mathe-matics, Ethics, Natural Sciences, and English Literature," The object of thisadvanced course is to give to young persons of decided ability the opportu-nity to prepare themseh'es thoroughly to meet the constantly increasingdemand for well-trained teachers in the higher grades of the publicschools.At the beginning of the next term in September, an Advanced Class will beorganized, and all who may desire to avail themselves of the privileges thusfreely offered by the State, at that time, are requested to make an earlyapplication.EXAM:IXATlONS AND GRADUATION.Examinations,both oral and written, are made each term in every study, andthe result in each must be satisfactory to enable the pupil to advance to thestudies' next in order. Only those pupils who have satisfactorily passed allthe examinations in the prescribed course of study receive the diploma of theInstitution.EMPLOYlI1ENT OF GRADUATES.The graduates of the school readily find employment in teaching. Thedemand for graduates to fill good positions in all the different grades of thepublic schools is much greater than the supply.10 STATE NORMAL SCHOOL.LmRARY, APPARATUS, AND CARINET.The Institution has a valuable LmRARY of works for general reference andreading, to which the pupils have daily access. Text-Books in nearly all therequired studies are furnished to students without charge. It also has APPA-RATUS, excellent in quality, for the illustration of the more important principlesin the Natural Sciences. And it has a good CABINET of minerals and otherspecimens used in teaching Natural History.Further additions of books for the library, of chemical and philosophicalapparatus, of minerals, plants, animals, and other specimens of natural his-tory, will be made as frequently as the funds of the school, or the donationsof its friends, will permit.SCHOOL YEAR AND TERMS.THE SCHOOL-YEAR is divided into two terms, - each term includingtwenty weeks, with a week's recess near the middle of the term.The next FALL TERM will commence on Tuesday, Septem-ber 7, 1869, and close on Tuesday, JanUa1"11 25,1870.The next SPRING TER~:rwill commence on Tuesday, Feb-ruary 22,1870, and close on Tuesday, July 12, 1870.[The present term will close on Tuesday, July 13, 11\69, with public exer-cises of Examination and Graduation, commencing at ~i o'clock, A. M.]SCHOOL REGULATIONS.Pupils are expected to attend public worship on the Sabbath, at any churchthey may select.At least one hour of exercise in the open air is required each day, weatherand· health permitting.All study hours, at home and at school, are to be spent quietly, and withoutcommunication.The hour for retiring is not late?' than ten o'clock, at all seasons of the year.Pupils must devote a proper amount of time to sleep. Seven hours of undis-turbed repose is the minimum. Unseasonable rising and study will be re-garded as a violation of the rules of the Institution.No absence or tardiness is allowed except in extreme cases.Absence from town must be on leave previously obtained from the Prin-cipal.STATE NORMAL SCHOOL.EXPENSES.11TUITION IS FREE to all who comply with the condition of teaching in theschools of Massachusetts, wherever they may have previously resided. Pupilswho fail to·comply with this condition are charged a reasonable sum for tui-tion. A fee of $2.00 is paid by each pupil, at the beginning of the term, tomeet incidental expenses.BOARD, in private families, varies from $4.00 to $4.50 a week; Washiug,fuel. and lights are a separate charge. Students who prefer to board them-selves can obtain rooms for 75 cents to $1.25 a week.A club is established which enables gentlemen to board at cost. At pres-ent the cost of the table is about $2.50 Ii week.A new Boarding Hall, for the accommodation of ladies, will be ready foruse in November next.·Pupils living on the line of the railroad, and wishing to board at home, canobtain tickets for the term at one-half the usual rate.PECUNIARY AID.For the assistance of those students who are unable to meet the expensesof a course of instruction in the school, the State makes an annual appropri-ation of one thousand dollars. This aid is not furnished during the firstthirteen weeks of attendance. After that time, those who reside not morethan twenty miles from the school, receive fifty cents per week; those resid-ing between twenty and thirty mUes, one dollar per week; and those morethan thirty miles, one dollar and fifty cents per week.Applications for this aid are required to be made to the Principal, in writ-ing, stating the reason, and giving good reference.This aid is furnished to those only who remain and complete the prescribedcourse of study, the first three terms of which must be consecutive. Pupilswho fail to comply with this condition are expected to refund any amountthey may have received. It is also expected that pupils who fail to teach inthe public schools of Massachusetts will return any amount they have re-ceived from the bounty of the State.BRIDGEWATER, June, 1869.
