Ornament simbolism in spanish Art Nouveau

Abstract

[SPA] El modernismo bebió de varias fuentes de inspiración que se plasmaron fundamentalmente en el lenguaje de su ornamentación. La naturaleza, la geometría, la arquitectura árabe, los dibujos chinescos, la arquitectura de la Antigüedad greco-romana... fueron todos transformados según la interpretación que los arquitectos modernistas hicieron de ellos. La comunicación muestra el origen de los distintos ornamentos, qué significado original tuvieron aquellas formas que decoraron las ciudades a principios del siglo XX y cómo se interpretaron estos símbolos por la sociedad burguesa de la época. El objetivo es lograr entender mejor el porqué de este lenguaje y evaluar hasta qué punto ese simbolismo fue entendido y aceptado en España. [ENG] Art Nouveau drew from various inspiration sources, primarily shaped in the language of its ornamentation. Nature, geometry, Moorish architecture, Chinese drawings, Ancient Greco-Roman architecture ... they were all transformed in the wayArt Nouveau architects interpreted them. The present paper shows the origin of the various ornaments and it also highlightsthe original meaning those forms that decorated the cities in the early twentieth century had and how these symbols were interpreted by bourgeois society of that time. The goal is to better understand why this language and to assess how that symbolism was understood and accepted in Spain
