In this Letter, we propose a generic nonlinear coupling coefficient, η2 NL ¼ ηjγ=β2jfiber2=jγ=β2jfiber1, which gives a quantitative measure for the efficiency of nonlinear matching of optical fibers by describing how a fundamental soliton couples from one fiber into another. Specifically, we use ηNL to demonstrate a significant soliton selffrequency shift of a fundamental soliton, and we show that nonlinear matching can take precedence over linear mode matching. The nonlinear coupling coefficient depends on both the dispersion (β2) and nonlinearity (γ), as well as on the power coupling efficiency η. Being generic, ηNL enables engineering of general waveguide systems, e.g., for optimized Raman redshift or supercontinuum generation

When coupling fundamentalsolitons between two nonlinear fibers, however, solitonnumber preservation becomes an equally importantmatching requirement, placing restrictions not only onthe dispersion of the fiber (β2), but also on their nonli-nearity (γ). Nonlinear soliton matching (NLSM) of fibersis becoming increasingly important for optimization ofsupercontinuum generation (SCG) by concatenatingsilica fibers [1], and for extending Raman redshift andSCG [2] into the infrared (IR) by concatenating silicaand soft-glass fibers.In this Letter, we show that a matching requirement onthe ratio of γ=jβ2j for the fibers ensures a good couplingof a fundamental soliton from one fiber into another. Theproposed scheme is generic, but we use it here to obtaincontinued redshift by the soliton self-frequency shift(SSFS). In particular, we use the NLSM to study the cou-pling between silica and soft-glass photonic crystal fibers(PCFs) and find parameter regimes in which a soliton,which is no longer redshifting in a silica fiber due tostrong dispersion [1], can couple into a soft-glass fiberfor further redshifting into the IR.Our generic concept of NLSM between two nonlinearfibers is illustrated in Fig. 1. First a fundamental soliton(soliton number N ¼ N1 ¼ 1) at pump wavelength λp islaunched into fiber 1 where it undergoes an initial red-shift (Fig. 1, bottom) until a desired coupling wavelengthλc. Subsequently the redshifted soliton is coupled intofiber 2, where it has a corresponding soliton numberN ¼ N2. There are then three scenarios depending on thesoliton number N2: (1) If N2 < 1=2, there is not enoughpower to excite a soliton in fiber 2 (Fig. 1, top left). In thiscase the spectral content of the pulse will not change, butthe pulse will spread temporally. (2) If 1=2 < N2 < 3=2(Fig. 1, top middle), the pulse will remain a fundamentalsoliton in fiber 2. This case of continued fundamental so-liton propagation gives a large conversion of energy fromthe input pulse to the redshifted soliton. (3) If N2 > 3=2(Fig. 1, top right), a higher-order soliton is generated,which will undergo soliton fission and possibly disper-sive wave generation. The breakup reduces the amountof energy converted from the input soliton wavelength tothe wavelength of the most redshifted soliton, but it in-creases the total soliton redshift.As an example illustrating the NLSM, we considercoupling between silica and soft-glass PCFs with holediameter d, pitch Λ, and seven rings of air holes [3].All fiber properties are calculated using a commerciallyavailable finite-element tool and material dispersion ta-ken from the literature [4–6]. Fiber 1 is made from fusedsilica and we investigate two different materials forfiber 2. Fiber 2a is a PCF made from highly nonlineartellurite and fiber 2b is a fluoride based ZBLAN PCF. The nonlinear coefficient is γ ¼ n2ω=½cAeff ,where n2 is the material nonlinear refractive index andc is the speed of light in vacuum. In fibers the governingequation is the generalized NLSE (GNLSE), which in-cludes the Raman effect and the complete dispersionprofile. To determine the development of the electricfield envelope, the GNLSE is solved numerically usinga fourth-order Runge–Kutta integration scheme, whereaccumulated error is controlled using the local errormethod [7,8]. The GNLSE is solved to obtain the contourplots shown both in Figs. 1 and 4. Because the centralwavelength is below 2 μm in fiber 1 at all times andbecause we focus specifically on the effect of the fibercoupling, propagation loss is ignored in both fiber 1and 2. As an initial condition we use a fundamental so-liton with a central wavelength λp ¼ 1550 nm, and FWHMpulse duration of TFWHM ¼ 50 fs, corresponding to anErbium laser source. In simulations we use the latestreported Raman response functions for each material[9,10]. After propagation in 10m of fiber 1, simulationof the GNLSE shows that the soliton has redshifted toλc ¼ 1816 nm due to the Raman effect [11], while continu-ously adjusting its pulse width and peak power to pre-serve N1 ¼ 1 (see Table 2). Using that N1 ¼ 1 we havethe relationN21 ¼ T201P01γ1=jβ21j ¼ 1; ð1Þwhere T01ðP01Þ is the pulse width (peak power) of thesoliton at the output of fiber 1 (see Fig. 1 for notation).We assume an adiabatic soliton coupling, which pre-serves the pulse shape when passing the interface, butcan decrease the peak power. Thus, it is reasonable toassume that T02 ¼ T01, where T02 is the soliton pulsewidth at the input of fiber 2. Fresnel reflection and MFDmismatch dictates that P02 ¼ ηP01, where 0 ≤ η ≤ 1 is thepower coupling efficiency. Using this, we define the non-linear coupling coefficientη2NL ≡ N22=N21 ¼ ηðγ2=jβ22jÞ=ðγ1=jβ21jÞ; ð2Þwhich is given in terms of material parameters, fiber dis-persion, and the power coupling efficiency η. In the caseconsidered here, when coupling a fundamental solitonfrom fiber 1 into fiber 2, ηNL is equivalent to the factorby which the soliton number changes across the inter-face. For further propagation of a stable soliton in fiber2, it is required that 1=2 < ηNL < 3=2. In Fig. 3 we showηNL for fibers 2a and 2b as function of wavelength. Noticethat ηNL is singular at β22 ¼ 0, thus ηNL → ∞ at λZD of fiber2. The black horizontal solid lines mark the band ofNLSM, where continued SSFS of a stable fundamentalsoliton can be expected. The power coupling efficiencydue to imperfect matching of the MFD of Gaussianshaped modes can be estimated from [12]ηMFD ¼ 4ðAeff;1Aeff;2Þ2=ðA2eff;1 þ A2eff;2Þ2: ð3ÞIt should be noted that the modes in PCFs are notGaussian shaped, but we use Eq. (3) as an approximationto the coupling efficiency. Using the effective areas fromTable 2 gives a power coupling efficiency of ηMFD ¼ 77%for the SiO2-tellurite coupling and ηMFD ¼ 99% ≈ 1 forthe SiO2-ZBLAN coupling, both at λ ¼ λc ¼ 1816 nm. Asindicated by Eq. (2), inclusion of the power couplingefficiency lowers the NLSM curve by a factor ofﬃﬃﬃﬃﬃﬃﬃﬃﬃﬃηMFDp.Figure 3 shows the NLSM curve for the SiO2-telluritecoupling both with η ¼ 1 and η ¼ ηMFD calculated fromEq. (3). We thus conclude that NLSM takes prece-dence over mode matching. In an experimental setting,additional loss mechanisms can be accounted for by cal-culating an overall power coupling efficiency η at theinterface, taking into account, e.g., Fresnel loss.In Fig. 3, we find that ηNL ≫ 3=2 both for η ¼ 1 and η ¼ηMFD when coupling into fiber 2a. Consequently, we ex-pect soliton fission will occur in fiber 2a after couplingfrom fiber 1. Simulation results for propagation in 10mof fiber 1 and 8 m in fiber 2a are shown in Fig. 4(a). Hereit is clearly confirmed that after a short distance ofpropagation in fiber 2a, soliton fission causes a breakupof the pulse, and generates multiple separated solitons.The central wavelength of the most redshifted soliton be-comes λ ¼ 3103 nm in this case, and approximately 18%of the energy in the input soliton has been converted tothis wavelength. If, on the other hand, the output fromfiber 1 is coupled into fiber 2b, where the NLSM condi-tion is satisfied so that 1=2 < ηNL < 3=2, a fundamentalsoliton will continue propagation and redshift. This isalso confirmed by simulations in Fig. 4(b). Here it isshown that the fundamental soliton from fiber 1 con-tinues stable redshift in fiber 2b, and the central wave-length increases from λc ¼ 1816 nm to 1857 nm. In thiscase approximately 83% of the energy from the inputpulse is converted to this wavelength.In conclusion, we have proposed a measure, ηNL,describing the coupling of fundamental solitons acrossa generic fiber interface. Because the proposed NLSMscheme depends both on material and fiber parameters,it is an important design tool for optimization of fiberwaveguide systems for, e.g., large redshifts of solitons.The usefulness of our scheme is demonstrated in a fibersystem that enables a redshift of 300 nm for a 50 fsfundamental soliton at λp ¼ 1550 nm with peak powerP0 ¼ 13:08 kW. We find an energy conversion efficiencyabove 80% in 30m of concatenated fibers. Also demon-strated is full octave spanning redshift of the same initialsoliton, where around 20% of the energy is converted to3100 nm in 18m of fiber. We have shown that in thisscheme matching dispersion and nonlinearity combinedtakes precedence over MFD matching. We speculate thatdesigning fiber systems with a broad wavelength rangesatisfying the NLSM condition is useful for extendingsupercontinuum into the IR.
