School Art and Free-Time Art – A Case Study ofChildren’s Art as CommunicationMarja Hannele HeikkinenAalto University, FinlandAbstractThe purpose of this study is to analyse art made by children and young peopleat school and in their freetime as social meanings and communication. Thefocus is on what kind of communication and what communicative needs chil-dren’s and young people’s art represents and serves, and what the implicationsfor art education at school could be. The theoretical approach is based on semi-otic analysis as suggested by the multimodal applications of critical discourseanalysis (e.g. Kress and van Leeuwen 2006) and Halliday’s systemic-functionaltheory (Halliday 1978). A sample of four drawings by a child in comprehen-sive school are analysed in detail, using the chosen theoretical framework. Thechosen material and theoretical approach raise elementary questions about thenature of art. The analysis would seem to show that there might be differencesin the communicative purposes represented in children’s school art and freetime art. Most importantly, the present study would seem to indicate that thechosen method of analysis would prove useful in further studies with a widerset of data, thus yielding important information about children’s communica-tive needs and their implications for art education.KeywordsArt education, Children’s art, School art, Free time art, Multimodal analysis.870 Synnyt / Origins | 2 / 2019 | Abstracts
