Failing to Deliver: Education and its Art in the CurrentPost-Truth SituationNadine M. Kalin1, Daniel T. Barney21University of North Texas, United States of America; 2Brigham Young UniversityAbstractFor the last seven years, the presenters have engaged tensions inherent in re-search dissemination venues and their corresponding institutions through aseries of interventions. Methods used to investigate the affordances and limitsof existing research dissemination formats, such as poster sessions, lectures,and roundtables, were generated from contemporary art practices. Addition-ally, various theoretical frameworks and philosophical provocations were em-ployed to test the reception and peer-review of particular actions. The contentof the newly conceptualized poster session, lecture, or roundtable was not ex-ceptionally radical in these sanctioned events, however, the actual forms ofwork shifted as they failed to deliver in interesting ways. For example, postersessions collapse but become something extraordinary when the rules of en-gagement, such as clarity, facts, convention, and transferability, are reimag-ined through social and embodied art practices. Likewise, a lecture that doesn’trely on facts or aim to convince, but instead turns to the audience for its con-tent and skepticism—asking for the expertise to come from them in actions orfeelings—functions quite differently as an emergent artist performance. The999 Synnyt / Origins | 2 / 2019 | Abstractsposter and the lecture are transformed in these moments through a deliberatesevering of default roles and modes of knowledge transfer associated with atraditional lecture. The presenters will unpack and contextualize their workwithin the current “post-truth condition,” drawing from the practices of sev-eral international artists.
