Following the tradition ofalternating locations of this event, the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne(EPFL) is proud to host this year’s meeting on its campus.The Fall Meeting continues to be a major event for chemical researchers with almost500 submitted abstracts for this year. 479 scientific contributions have been accept-ed in the fields of analytical chemistry, medicinal chemistry, computational chemistry,inorganic and coordination chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, andpolymer science. Plenary sessions and eight parallel sessions will offer a total of 110invited lectures and contributed talks. In addition, a large panel of posters will be ondisplay. As in past meetings, there will be a jury to select the best oral and posterpresentations, for which prizes will be awarded.As in the past, the SCS Fall Meeting represents a unique occasion for young chem-ists to present the results of their research. Senior scientists have also been invited toshare their recent achievements with us. We are pleased to welcome two very well-known scientists, David Parker and Kenneth Raymond, for the Minisymposium ofInorganic Chemistry which is organized this year in honour of Jean-Claude Bünzli.The Divisions of Analytical Chemistry and Polymers and Colloids will host MartinSchär, Jean-François Gohy and Joannis Kallitsis as guest speakers.The organization of such a large meeting would not be possible without financialsupport and the voluntary help from many people. MiscellaneousSCG NEWSThe Swiss Chemical Society is a Pool of WellEducated and Professionally Experienced PeopleAlmost half of the working SCS members are active in academia,half in industry. This was revealed in a member survey under-taken recently.Chemists typically enter the SCS when they are doctoral stu-dents or post-docs. Currently, every fifth SCS member (18%) isa student.Only 3 percent of the working SCS members are self-employed.The remainder works at universities (44%), in industry (43%),in public administration (6%), as high school teachers (2%) orin NGOs (1%).SCS members take a strong interest in research. This is reflectedby the fact that every second SCS member (48%) is a memberof the Division of Chemical Research. Every fourth SCS mem-ber (25%) is specially interested in medicinal chemistry, 22% inanalytics, 12% in industrial chemistry (as a general field) and10% in polymers.SCS currently has 2531 members.The survey was conducted between April and June 2009.Call for Nominations for SCS Prizes 2010SCS invites nominations to its scientific awards. SCS created anew chemistry teaching award, the Balmer Prize, which is alsoopen to nominations.
