Baccio Baccetti, Editor-in-Chief of Redia since2003, the centennial of publication of the journal,passed away on 18 December 2010. His death was agreat loss for the entire Editorial Board of the journaland for the Italian scientific community.His remarkable knowledge of the anatomy, physiol-ogy and biology of insects, acquired during his longcareer as a researcher and teacher, made him a valu-able collaborator and diligent observer of new discov-eries in entomology. He began to observe the behav-iour of insects as a child and frequented the “RegiaStazione di Entomologia” as early as 10 years of age.At 21, he began to publish his first studies on the sys-tematics of Orthoptera in Redia and at 23 was award-ed his degree in Agrarian Sciences cum laude, withpublication of his thesis. At only 25, he had alreadypublished 16 papers in this journal. At the time, theseworks represented the fundamental base of knowl-edge on the systematics and biology of ItalianOrthoptera. Contem poraneously, he began to take aninterest in the anatomy of other insects, and his stud-ies carried out with the first transmission and scanningelectron microscopes in the 1960s-’70s yielded knowl-edge widely used and confirmed by entomologiststhroughout the world. The eclecticism and scientificvalidity of the man then became clear with his studieson the Malpighian tubules of many insect species andlater on the ultrastructure of the sperm.Known and appreciated by the whole scientificcommunity as an excellent teacher, he was a memberof the most important national and internationalacademies of zoology, entomology and microscopy.Because of his fame in international entomologicalcircles, he was entrusted by the international com-mittee of the congress of entomology to organize theXX International Congress of Entomology in Flo -rence in 1996.With his intellectual abilities, he provided animportant stimulus to the revival of Redia and, uponassuming the post of the journal’s Editor-in-Chief, heassembled an international Editorial Board of special-ists. Replacing him as Editor-in-Chief of Redia willnot be an easy task, especially at a particularly diffi-cult time for all scientific journals not part of largepublishing groups. However, this must represent astimulus to maintain and increasingly advance thisjournal founded by Antonio Berlese and publisheduninterruptedly for almost 110 years.Roberto NannelliIN MEMORY OF BACCIO BACCETTI
