The sociology of knowledge is a scientific discipline that studies knowledge from a sociological viewpoint. It especially investigates the relationship between knowledge and social structure and maintains that different knowledge systems are valid for every different social structure. For the sociology of knowledge, knowledge is a “problem” that is originated from the social reality. In this paper the sociology of knowledge and its definition, objectives, scope and basic approaches are reviewed and the theoretical possibilities that it offers to the field of librarianship are discussed.Bilgi sosyolojisi, bilgiyi sosyolojik bakış açısıyla ele alıp inceleyen bir bilim dalıdır. Bilgi sosyolojisi, özellikle, bilgi-toplumsal yapı ilişkisini irdeleyerek, her farklı toplum yapısı için farklı bilgiler sisteminin geçerli olacağını öne sürer. Bilgi sosyolojisi için bilgi, toplumsal gerçeklikten kaynaklanan bir “sorun”dur. Bu çalışmada bilgi sosyolojisi, tanım, amaç, kapsam ve temel yaklaşımları itibarıyla ele alınarak, bu bilim dalının kütüphanecilik alanı için sunduğu kuramsal olanaklar tartışılacaktır
