The Norton fossilforest (Fig. 1) contains upright treetrunks smaller, but considerably olderthan at Joggins. Near Sussex, soft-sedi-ment deformation (slumping) of  shaleand oil shale is visible over severalmagnitudes, with these strata overlainby coarsening upward lake shorefacesandstone. At Albert Mines, solid bitu-men (Albertite) is abundant adjacent toabandoned mine shafts and fossil fishmay be excavated with a bit of  luck.Thick beds of  often imbricate alluvialfan conglomerate form the ‘flowerpots’ at Hopewell Cape (Fig. 2). Althoughthis excursion will visit accessible road-side exposures, there will be significantwalking along beaches (partly overboulders, and approximately 200stairs), including one traverse 6 km(round trip) in length. Due to uneventerrain and unpredictable weather,rugged footwear and rain gear arehighly recommended.
