Position paper : researching and developing open architectures for national health information systems in developing African countries

Abstract

Based on field experiences and requirements in South Africa, Mozambique and Rwanda, the Health Enterprise Architecture laboratory (at the School of Computer Science, University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa) is evolving a generic Health Enterprise Architecture Framework and Repository of Tools specifically for low resource settings. Development of an open architectural framework is a necessary first step to facilitate the design and rapid implementation of effective National Health Information Systems (NHIS). The paper describes the three initiatives and some expected impacts on implementing health information systems in developing African countries
