O presente estudo teve como objetivo discutir acerca do espa?o rural e como este espa?o pode vir a ser produto e condi??o para o desenvolvimento da atividade turistico-recreativa. Busca refletir sobre como as localidades rurais podem alcan?ar beneficios sociais e econ?micos articulando-se estrategicamente para o desenvolvimento local, configurando-se em um territ?rio singular para o fomento da atividade tur?stico-recreativa. Atrav?s de investiga?ao bibliogr?fica, foram abordadas as altera??es ocorridas no meio rural que permitiram sua multifuncionalidade e a inser?ao do turismo, onde a recrea??o est? no leque das novas op??es de desenvolvimento rural e social. Ao relacionar atividades economicas industriais primarias e hospitalidade rural ao turismo e recrea??o, se concluiu que estas podem ser o grande vetor desta atividade alternativa no campo, atrav?s de seu valor simb?lico e caracter?sticas peculiares, como por exemplo, a produ??o econ?mica rural, a gastronomia, a hist?ria e a cultura. A discuss?o ? ilustrada com exemplos de localidades da ind?stria agro-a?ucareira de Cuba e a produ??o rural no Brasil.The present study aimed to discuss about the rural space and how this space can become a product and condition for the development of tourism-recreational activity. It seeks to reflect on how localities can achieve benefits articulating strategically for local development, becoming a unique territory for the promotion of tourism and recreational activity. Through the bibliographical research, the changes that occurred in the rural area that allowed its multifunctionality and the insertion of tourism in the range of the new options of rural and social development were approached. By relating primary industrial economic activities and rural hospitality to tourism and recreation, it was concluded that these can be the great vector of this alternative activity in the field, through its symbolic value and peculiar characteristics, such as rural economic production, gastronomy, history and culture. The discussion is illustrated with examples of localities destined to the agro-sugar industry of Cuba and the rural production in Brazil
