One of the mainchallenges in the design of such a wide-swath reflectorsystem is the compensation of the defocussing of the ra-diation patterns at large scan angles. The defocused pat-terns lead to a performance degradation and in particularresult in a high range dependence of the azimuth ambi-guities level. This problem is addressed in the paper byconsidering signal processing and antenna design solu-tion approaches allowing to overcome the challenge.1. INTRODUCTIONThe Digital Beam-Forming (DBF) Synthetic ApertureRadar (SAR) utilizing a parabolic reflector antenna withmultiple feed elements has been proposed in [1] for thefirst time. This innovative system concept offers higherflexibility and better performance compared to the planarbased design [2], and is being considered for the futureEarth observation space borne SAR missions.Design aspects, various performance parameters andcharacteristics of the reflector based DBF SAR were dis-cussed in a number of publications including [2], [3]and [4]. It was shown that one of the main problems in awide-swath DBF SAR using a parabolic reflector antennais the deterioration of the radiation patterns at large eleva-tion scan angles due to the defocussing [4]. This in turnresults in a severe degradation of the system performancein terms of the azimuth ambiguities level.Two main approaches focused on the improvement ofsystem’s azimuth performance are considered in the pa-per. The paper starts with an introduction of a designstructure and the main operational principles of the dig-ital beam-forming SAR using a parabolic antenna withmultiple feed elements. The discussion is followed by adescription of the DBF SAR system parameters and anoperational scenario. Afterwards the digital signal pro-cessing approach aimed at the improvement of azimuthperformance is considered. REFLECTOR BASED DBF SAR ARCHITEC-TURE AND OPERATIONGeneral design structure of the digital beam-formingSAR system based on the reflector antenna is depictedin Fig. 1. It consists of a reflector dish, an array of pri-mary antennas located in the focal plane, a feed systemcircuitry and a digital control system. Each feed elementis connected to a Transmit/Receive (TR) module. Thereceiver part is represented by switches, low noise am-plifiers, mixers, frequency filters, and analog-to-digitalconverters. In the transmitter part a conventional analogconfiguration based on phase shifters is used.Digital Beam-Forming in Elevation: the system is oper-ated in Scan-On-Receive (SCORE) mode assuming thatthe ground swath of interest is illuminated by a widetransmit beam and a narrow receive beam scans over theentire swath following the pulse on ground [5], [6].The narrow high-gain receive beam is achieved by acti-vating a single or a few reflector feed elements while thewide low-gain transmit beam is formed when all the feedsare activated. The operational principle of the system isdemonstrated in Fig. 2. The scanning of the swath is per-formed by successive activation of primary feed elementsand digital combination of weighted data from the signalchannels according to:sout(t) =n∑i=1wi(t) · sini(t), (1)where n is the number of activated elements in elevation,wi(t) are complex weighting coefficients, sini(t) is theinput signal at the ith channel, sout(t) is the output signal.Receive Mode Transmit Modea) b)Figure 2. Each azimuthelement “looks” at a different angle and by this covers adistinct angular (Doppler) segment. Thus each elementsamples a narrow Doppler spectrum corresponding to thehalf-power beamwidth of the pattern. If the Dopplerspectra of the elements are contiguous, they jointly yielda higher azimuth resolution. Each of the azimuth chan-nels carriers non-redundant information [7], [10].3. DBF SAR SYSTEM SPECIFICATIONS ANDTHE INITIAL REFLECTOR DESIGNThe parameters of the DBF SAR system are given inTable 1. It is represented by a circular parabolic dishwith a diameter of 6m and 6.2m focal length. The feedsystem is a two dimensional matrix composed of 36primary feeds in elevation and 4 elements in azimuth andcentered in the focal point. The system is operated atTable 1. DEGRADED AZIMUTH PERFORMANCEAND SOLUTION APPROACHESAs mentioned in Section 1 one of the main problems ap-pearing in the reflector based DBF SAR system and re-sulting in its performance decrease is the degraded an-tenna patterns at large scan angles. The far angular scan-ning range is illuminated by activating the feeds locatedfar from the focal point of the parabolic system. Thus,due to the system defocussing, the patterns obtained insuch a way have a large half power beamwidth and a highside lobe level. In particular, this leads to a high level ofazimuth ambiguities of the DBF SAR.a)b)Figure 3. a). Azimuth-Ambiguity-to-Signal Ratio ofthe DBF SAR system based on the initial antenna config-uration.In Fig. 3 a) a normalized two-way azimuth pattern of theinitial reflector design is shown for an elevation angle of−7.2◦. Here, the processed Doppler bandwidth for a sin-gle channel of 1.5 kHz is indicated by the central bar,while the ambiguous spectral domains are depicted bythe off-center bars. The level of Azimuth-Ambiguity-to-Signal Ratio of the DBF SAR based on the correspond-ing antenna configuration is presented in Fig. 3 b). In thissection two main methods aiming at the improvement ofthe system’s azimuth performance are presented.4.1. Digital Signal Processing ApproachOne of the possible solutions to improve the azimuth pat-terns and thus to reduce the level of ambiguities is to ap-ply the Conjugate Field Matching principle (CFM) [8].Using this approach the individual azimuth channels areweighted with the coefficients chosen as the complexconjugate values of the field incident on the feed ele-ments:wi(t) = g∗i(t). (2)where g is the complex incident field value correspondingto a single feed element, i is the element number, t is thetime and w is the weighting coefficient.A normalized azimuth far field two-way pattern of the ini-tial antenna configuration using 4 azimuth channels withthe CFM weights is depicted in Fig. 4 by the dashed lineand compared to the case of a single azimuth channelshown by the solid line. From the obtained results wecan see that the CFM principle applied to obtain complexweights for the azimuth channels can decrease the aver-age level of azimuth ambiguities at large scan angles bymore than 2 dB.Figure 4. REFLECTOR SURFACE FORM-SHAPING AP-PROACHAnother approach aimed at the improvement of the DBFSAR azimuth performance consists in form-shaping ofthe reflector surface. In Fig. 5 several examples of reflec-tor surface shapes are shown. This method applied to thenovel DBF SAR system has been discussed in [4] wherethe performance of the system based on the elliptical re-flector antenna, Fig. 5 b), was considered. However el-liptical design solves the problem only partially and doesnot offer a smooth and low level of azimuth ambiguitiesover the entire swath.c)b)a)Figure 5. Reflector surface shape forms: circularparabolic (a), elliptical parabolic (b), parabolic cylinder(c).To obtain the constant level of azimuth ambiguities theDBF SAR must be combined with an antenna havingnarrow azimuth patterns with a non-varying shape overthe scanning angular range. One possible solution is aparabolic cylinder antenna shown in Fig. 5 c). This shapeof the reflector antenna requires a line-source feed withits aperture coinciding with the focal line of the cylinder[9]. In one plane the field source is focused (azimuth)while in the other plane the cylinder to a certain extendreproduces the pattern of the primary source (elevation).Because this is a singly curved surface, it is possible toobtain constant performance in azimuth.Figure 6. Normalized two-way azimuth patterns corre-sponding to the elevation angle of −7.2◦ of the circu-lar parabolic (solid line) and parabolic cylinder systems(dashed line).In contrast to the simple parabolic antenna system in theparabolic cylinder configuration the scanning mechanismon receive is realized by activating all the feed elementsand applying a phase shift to each of them as it is donein the classical planar antenna configuration. On transmitmode just a few elements are activated so that a wide pat-tern illuminating the entire ground swath is obtained. InFig. 6 the azimuth two-way pattern of the parabolic cylin-der corresponding to the scan angle of −7.2◦ is depictedby the dashed line and compared with the case of the ini-tial parabolic antenna design shown by the solid line. Wecan see that the expected decrease of the azimuth ambi-guities level when using the cylindrical system is around10 dB.6. DBF SAR SYSTEM PERFORMANCEIn Fig. 7, Fig. 8 and Fig. 9 performance character-istics of the DBF SAR systems based on the initialparabolic antenna design (solid line) and the paraboliccylinder reflector configuration (dashed line) are com-pared in terms of the Azimuth-Ambiguity-to-Signal Ratio(AASR), Range-Ambiguity-to-Signal Ratio (RASR) andNoise-Equivalent Sigma Zero (NESZ) correspondingly.Figure 7. RASR of the DBF SAR system based on theinitial parabolic (solid line) and the parabolic cylinderantenna (dashed line).As one can see from the obtained results the level ofAASR in case of the parabolic cylinder system remainsconstant with small variations over the swath and is 6dB better than the initial parabolic antenna case. How-ever the level of RASR is worse for the cylindrical sys-tem which is due to the higher side lobe level of theFigure 9. The corresponding eleva-tion patterns for the parabolic and cylindrical systems areshown in Fig. 10 and Fig. 11 correspondingly. The tri-angles at the top of the plot represent the positions of theambiguous angular directions for the given look angles.The sidelobes present a problem in the parabolic cylin-der since the relative gain between the line source and thefinal antenna system is not sufficient to suppress the side-lobes of the source. In spite of the fact that the cylindricalsystem has in general lower gain, the level of NESZ forboth systems remains mainly the same. This is due tothe fact that the parabolic configuration uses 3 active el-ements on receive in order to reduce pulse extension lossand thus, the receive gain drops compared to the maxi-mum system gain.Figure 10. CONCLUSIONTwo different approaches aimed at the reduction of theazimuth ambiguities level of the DBF SAR system basedon the reflector antenna are considered in the paper. Thefirst approach is related to the signal processing and as-sumes the use of an antenna feed matrix to “collect” theenergy of the defocused signal distributed over a widearea. It was demonstrated that the use of complex weight-ing coefficients for signal channels and application of cor-responding digital signal processing algorithms allow toimprove the level of azimuth ambiguities for the consid-ered case by around 2 dB.The second approach discussed in the paper is related tothe antenna design and consists in a surface form shapingof the reflector. Unlike the system based on the initialparabolic antenna configuration, the DBF SAR systemusing a parabolic cylinder surface shape combined witha digital feed array experiences no pattern degradationin azimuth over the whole scanning range. Performanceof the DBF SAR system based on both antenna configu-rations was estimated and compared. It was shown thatthe uniform azimuth patterns of the cylindrical antennadesign allowed to achieve a low and smooth level of az-imuth ambiguities. This was possible at the expense ofhigher range ambiguities level which can be however re-duced by optimizing a design of the primary line sourceaperture and weights.The paper demonstrated some of the key possibilities toimprove the azimuth performance of the reflector basedDBF SAR. The system can be optimized for the givenoperational scenario using different approaches related tothe signal processing as well as to the antenna hardwaredesign. However optimizing the system for a single per-formance characteristic a care must be given to the choiceof the optimization approach taking into account all theother performance parameters of interest.REFERENCES[1] G.
