An efficient route allowing the synthesis of 6-amino and 6-ethoxy-2(1H)-pyridone derivatives by reaction of ethyl cyanoacetimidate, ethyl ethoxycarbonylacetimidate and related acetamidines with diethyl ethoxymeth-ylenemalonate (EMME) is reported.
