Foleyääni on viime vuosikymmeninä yhä suurempaan rooliin noussut elokuvan äänen jälkituotannon osa-alue, jolla kerrotaan erityisesti elokuvan henkilöhahmoista. Foleyääntä tehdään studiossa, ja äänet tuotetaan fyysisesti oman kehon ja erilaisten tavaroiden avulla kuvaa samalla katsoen.
Opinnäytetyössä avataan ensin foleyäänen tekemisprosessia yleisesti, jotta varsinainen aihe avautuu mahdollisimman hyvin lukijalle. Ydinkysymys on, mitä foleyäänellä voidaan kertoa henkilöhahmoista elokuvassa. Opinnäytetyö perustuu ammatilliseen kirjallisuuteen, blogeihin ja artikkeleihin, joissa foleyn parissa työskennelleet ammattilaiset kertovat ajatuksistaan foleyyn liittyen. Lisäksi on haastateltu foleyartistia ja elokuvatutkijaa. Ajatukset liitetään elokuvan äänikerrontaan ja tarinankerrontaan yleisemmin.
Selvisi, että foleyäänellä on vahva teoreettinen pohja, joka perustuu syvällisesti elokuvan tarinankerrontaan. Foleyn tärkein tehtävä on tukea tarinaa henkilöhahmojen kautta. Foleyn teoria kytkeytyy myös esimerkiksi näyttelijäntyön ja kuvaleikkauksen teoriaan mielenkiintoisella tavalla.
Opinnäytetyössä tutkittiin, miten foleyäänellä voi kertoa esimerkiksi henkilöhahmojen luonteesta, tunnetiloista, aikomuksista tai hahmojen välisistä suhteista. Foleyäänellä voi kertoa hahmoista vaivihkaa, katsojan tätä elokuvaa katsoessa tajuamatta. Foley myös tekee henkilöhahmoista todellisen tuntuisia. Foleyn avulla katsoja siis eläytyy paremmin hahmojen persooniin, ja uskoo heidän olevan todellisia.Foley sound is a part of film sound post-production that has taken an increasingly important role in film sound during the past decades. Foley tells especially of the characters of the film. Foley sound is produced in a studio, and the sounds are made physically with one’s own body and different items. Foley is made by watching the picture and simultaneously making the sounds.
The thesis explains first the foley making process, so that the actual subject opens out to the reader as clearly as possible. The main focus is on what foley sound can tell about the characters in a film. The thesis is based on professional literature, blogs and articles, in which the experts of foley explain their thoughts about the foley. Also a foley artist and a film scholar were interviewed. The thoughts were connected with film storytelling and especially with storytelling by sound.
It was found out that foley sound has a strong theoretic fundament, that is profoundly based on film storytelling. The most important purpose of foley is to support the story through the characters. The theory of foley also connects with the theories of acting and picture editing in an interesting way.
This study examines how foley sound can tell, for example, of the personality, feelings or the intentions of the character. Foley can tell sensitively about the character, without the spectator noticing it. Also, foley makes the character feel real to the spectator. With foley, the spectator empathizes more with the characters and believes them to be real
