Opinnäytetyön teoriaosa pohjautuu aikaisempaan opinnäytetyöhöni, jossa tuotin perehdytysoppaan vapaaehtoistyöntekijöille Suomen Lähetysseuran työkeskukselle Israeliin. Oppaan tarkoituksena oli auttaa Suomesta saapuvia vapaaehtoistyöntekijöitä perehtymään keskuksen toimintaan ja paikalliseen kulttuuriin.
Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli jatkaa samalla teemalla vapaaehtoistyöstä, perehdyttämisestä ja monikulttuurisuudesta. Aiheeksi muotoutui vapaaehtoistyöntekijöiden kokemuksia perehdyttämisestä ja tutkimusympäristöksi Helsingin seurakuntayhtymässä tehty vapaaehtoistyö turvapaikanhakijoiden keskuudessa syksyllä 2015.
Aineisto kerättiin ryhmä- ja yksilöhaastatteluilla keväällä 2016. Haastateltavat olivat Helsingin seurakuntayhtymän sisällä vapaaehtoisina toimineita henkilöitä. Haastattelut analysointiin sisällönanalyysillä.
Perehdytystä oli saatu perehdytystilaisuudessa, sähköpostilla tai paikan päällä toisilta vapaaehtoisilta. Perehdytys nähtiin hyvin tärkeänä. Perehdytyksen laatuun ja määrään keskeisimmin vaikuttanut tekijä oli akuutista tilanteesta johtuva kiire, millä asioita jouduttiin organisoimaan. Perehdytyksen vähäisyyttä pidettiin myös positiivisena asiana, mikä oli antanut tilaa omalle halulle auttaa.
Jatkokysymykseksi ja laajemman tutkimuksen aiheeksi tämän aineiston pohjalta nousi pohdinta perehdytyksen sisällöistä ja määrästä vapaaehtoistyössä. Minkälaiset perehdytyssisällöt voivat olla tukemassa vapaaehtoistyöhön lähdön motiiveja ja jopa kasvattamassa halua osallistua toimintaan?

The background to this research was my old thesis where I made a manual for volunteer workers in FELM’s workplace in Jerusalem, Israel. The manual’s aim was to help volunteers get adjusted to the new workplace and get acquainted with the surrounding culture.
The aim of this thesis was to continue with the same themes about volunteer work, introduction and multicultural work. The theme developed to be a volunteer worker’s experiences of introduction and the frame of reference became the Finnish Evangelical-Church’s work among the asylum seekers in fall 2015.
The material was gathered by a group and personal interviews in spring 2016. The interviewees had been working in congregations around the Helsinki area. The material was analyzed by content analysis.
The volunteers had gotten introduction from an orientation event, by e-mail or from the other volunteers. The most influential effect on introduction was the acute situation which led to a feeling of rush in the way things were organized. There was a feeling of positivity because of the lack of introduction. An interviewee felt that it gave space to the urge to help.
This thesis brought about a question and interest to investigate wider the subject of introductions’ content and quantity. What kind of subjects in the introduction can support volunteer workers’ inner motivation and even increase in the willingness to take part in the actual work?
