Seurakunnan on vaikea antaa tukea kohtukuoleman kohdanneille perheille, koska tieto niistä ei tule terveydenhuollon puolelta seurakuntaan suoraan. Tieto tulee perheen itsensä tai jonkun läheisen ottaessa yhteyttä seurakuntaan. Kohtukuoleman kohtaa vuodessa 200 perhettä. Opinnäytetyö oli laadullinen tutkimus, jonka tarkoituksena oli selvittää, millaista tukea kohtukuoleman kohdanneet perheet ovat saaneet ja toivovat seurakunnalta.
Tutkimus toteutettiin KÄPY – Lapsikuolemaperheet ry:n kautta Webropol-kyselynä. Tutkimuksen perusteella osa perheistä oli saanut tukea seurakunnalta. Hyvin usein tuo saatu tuki oli sairaalapapin antamaa. Millaista tukea perheet kaipaavat seurakunnalta? He toivovat, että seurakunta huomioisi surun ja tunnustaisi kuolleen ja kastamattoman lapsen sekä kohtelisi vanhempia vanhempina. Perheet eivät välttämättä toivo keskustelua, usein heidän mielestään riittää pelkkä hiljainen läsnäolo. Seurakunnalta saatua taloudellista tukea (lapsen hautajaiskustannuksiin) pidettiin suurena helpotuksena etenkin huonommassa taloudellisessa tilanteessa.

The church has difficulties providing support to the families with stillbirth due to the fact that the information about them is not directly transferred from the healthcare to the church. The information is received either from the families themselves or from close friends or relatives as they contact the church. Stillbirth is annually experienced in 200 families. The thesis was based on qualitative research. The aim of the study was to find out what kind of support the families with an experience of stillbirth received and hoped for from the church.
The study was conducted by the organisation KÄPY – Lapsikuolemaperheet ry as a Webropol survey. The study showed that part of the families had received support from the church. Very often the support had been given by the hospital priest. Families would have liked the church to pay attention to their grief and acknowledge their deceased and unbaptized child and to treat them as parents. Families did not necessarily long for discussions. In their opinion, being quietly present was often enough. Financial support given by the church for the child's funeral expenses was seen as a great relief, when in a difficult financial situation.
