Portsa-kaupunginosauutiset eli Portsa-projekti oli Turun Sanomien toteuttama kokeilu, jossa kansalaisjournalistit, koululaiset ja journalismin opiskelijat veivät paikallisuutisoinnin mikrotasolle kirjoittamalla juttuja ja uutisia Turun Port Arthur -kaupunginosasta.
Projektissa oli tekijöitä yhteensä noin 20. Sivut avautuivat 1.10.2011. Alun perin projektin oli tarkoitus kestää vain joulukuuhun 2011 asti, mutta koska tekijät olivat innostuineita ja juttuja syntyi, jatkui projekti loppuen lopuksi maaliskuuhun 2012 asti. Loppuvaiheessa kaikkien innostus oli jo vähäisempää.
Lyhyeksi jääneestä elinajastaan huolimatta Portsa-projekti palkittiin toukokuussa 2012 Sanomalehtien liiton Vuoden parhaat -kilpailussa luovasta sosiaalisen median käytöstä.
Hyvän alun jälkeen lukijamäärät olivat kuitenkin Turun Sanomille pettymys. Verkkosivuilla käyntejä olisi tarvittu huomattavasti enemmän, jotta projekti olisi voinut jatkua. Turun Sanomien edustajat pitävät projektia kuitenkin onnistuneena kokeiluna. Projektin myötävaikutuksella paikallisuus on lisääntynyt Turun Sanomien painetussa versiossa.
Tämän tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää Portsa-projektia ja sen merkitystä Turun Sanomille. Mitä Turun Sanomat halusi ja sai Portsa-projektilta? Tutkielmassa perehdytään myös siihen, miten projektiin osallistuneet kansalaisjournalistit ja journalistiopiskelijat kokivat Portsa-projektin.
Lisäksi tutkielmassa tutkitaan sitä, mitä olisi pitänyt suurempien kävijämäärien lisäksi muuttua, että projekti olisi voinut jatkua.
Tutkielma on tehty toimeksiantona Turun Sanomille.Portsa -neighborhood news, aka the Portsa-project was an experiment carried out by Turun Sanomat, in which citizen journalists, elementary school pupils and journalism students took the reporting of local news to microlevel by writing stories and news about the neighborhood of Port Arthur.
The number of people who worked in the Portsa-project was circa 20. The webpages opened on the 1st October in 2011. Orginally the project was planned to last until December 2011, but since the writers were excited and stories were born, the project lasted until March 2012. Towards the end of the project, the enthusiasm had already decreased a little.
Despite the short period of time, the Portsa-project was rewarded in May 2012 of the creative use of social media by the Finnish Newspapers Association in its Best of the Year –competition.
After a good start, the number of readers was a disappointment to Turun Sanomat. It would have taken a lot more visitors to the webpages in order to continue the project. Yet the representatives of Turun Sanomat thinks that the experiment was successful. The number of local news has increased in Turun Sanomat as a result of the project. In addition, the lessons learned about working in projects provided Turun Sanomat a lot of useful information during the Portsa project.
The aim of the present bachelor´s thesis was to study the Portsa-project and its significance for Turun Sanomat as well as to explore what Turun Sanomat aimed to achieve with this project and if the goals were reached. In addition, the study also discusses how the citizen journalists and journalism students experienced the Portsa-project.
The study also discusses other factors that should have been changed in addition to the need of a larger number of visitors in order to make it possible to continue the project.
