Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää Suomen kirjastojen mahdollisuus toteuttaa yhteisenä hankkeena LibWiki, wikitietokanta. LibWiki olisi kirjastojen ylläpitämä luotettava tiedonlähde niin asiakkaille kuin kirjastojen henkilökunnille. Wiki toimisi pääosin samaan tapaan kuin normaali Wikipedia, mutta itse artikkelien kirjoitus ja muokkaus onnistuisi vain valituilta tahoilta, jolloin sisältö olisi luotettavampaa.
Tutkimuksessa hyödynnettiin kvantitatiivisia tutkimusmenetelmää kyselytutkimuksen muodossa. Kysely lähetettiin 336 yleiseen ja 150 tieteelliseen kirjastoon, joista saatiin 142 vastausta. Tutkimustulosten mukaan LibWikin kaltaiselle palvelulle olisi käyttöä ja se nähtiin hyväksi lisäksi kirjastojen jo tarjoamia verkkopalveluja. Ongelmakohtana pidettiin yleistä resurssipulaa, jota LibWikin kaltainen iso projekti kuormittaisi entisestään.
Kyselyn esille tuomien näkökantojen ja kysymysten pohjalta opinnäytetyö pyrkii tarjoamaan eri vaihtoehtoja toteuttaa projekti onnistuneesti.The aim of the research was to find out if there was a possibility to make a LibWiki, a wiki-based database in collaboration with all Finnish libraries. LibWiki would be a reliable information source for all the library patrons and employees. It would work mainly in the same way as Wikipedia does, the main difference being that only certain chosen ones would have the rights to write and edit articles making the source more reliable.
The data for the research was collected with a quantitative method in the form of a questionnaire. The questionnaire was sent to 336 public and 150 scientific libraries and from those 142 answered. According to the results librarians thought that there would be a use for service like LibWiki and it was seen as a good addition to Internet services already provided by the libraries. Many of the respondents saw that libraries already lack recourses and a big project like LibWiki would only burden them more.
This thesis tries to bring solutions and answers that raised from the questionnaire so that there would be a way to make this project possible in the future
