Tutkin sumi-e-tekniikkaa, sen periaatteita ja lähtökohtia, välineitä, materiaaleja ja menetelmiä oman tekemisen ja teoksen kautta. Pyrin ymmärtämään ja tavoittamaan sekä sen henkeä, että sen tapoja. Halusin oppia ymmärtämään tekniikan perusteet, tekemällä, tarkkailemalla ja tutkimalla.
Opinnäytetyöni teoriaosiossa käyn läpi sumi-e:n historiaa ja siihen vaikuttaneita tekijöitä myös sitä, mistä tekniikka on peräisin ja millä tavoin se on kehittynyt sellaiseksi, kuin se on nykyään. Tutkin myös tekniikan materiaaleja ja välineitä tekniikassa tekemisen ohessa. Koetan saada selville taidesuuntauksen idean ja ajattelutavan, millä periaattein sitä tehdään. Suuntauksessa yhä uudelleen esiintyvä taideaihe on elämä ilman suurempaa päämäärää ja taiteilijan sen hetkinen sielun tila, sekä se tunne, että on ajattomassa tilassa matkalla ei-minnekään. Jokainen maisema, jokainen tuulessa heiluva bambun oksan tai korkeuksiin kohoavan kallion luonnos on sellaisten hetkien kuvastuma. Länsimaalainen taide pyrkii ja haluaa nähdä luonnon aina jäsentyneenä ja lokeroituneena kokonaisuutena, jossa henkisellä pohdiskelulla ei ole sijaa.
Sumi-e-tekniikassa pyrkimys yksinkertaisen ja pelkistetyn tilan, tunteen ja elementin kuvaamiseen on tärkeämpää kuin yksityiskohtaisen ja valokuvatarkan kuvan luominen. Bambun lehtien avulla ja siveltimen vedoilla päätin toteuttaa henkisen tilani masentuneisuuden ja epätasapainoisuuden. Harjoitusvedoksissa keskityin siveltimen, käden ja kehon yhteistyön opettelemiseen. Harjoituksien ohessa opettelin myös vetojen, viivojen, siveltimen ja musteen käyttöä. Oman teoksen kautta tutkiminen avaa ovia ymmärtämiseen ja havainnointiin, jotka puolestaan opettavat minulle tekniikan tekemiselle oleellisia asioita.
Sumi-e:ssä taiteilija yhdistelee luonnonelementtejä jättäen pois kaiken, mikä ei kiinnosta häntä ja pyrkii vangitsemaan oman tulkintansa kohteen todellisesta olemuksesta sen sijaan, että tavoittelisi mahdollisimman yksityiskohtaista jäljennöstä. Tekniikkaa harjoitellessani havaitsin, että viivan merkitys tekniikassa on huomattavasti suurempi, kuin länsimaalaisessa taiteessa.I studied Sumi-e technique, its principles and where it started and also what materials and different methods of it using my own work piece as a reference. The objectives of this work are to understand and achieve the spirit and old ways of the era. I wanted to understand the principles of the technique by working, observing and by studying it.
In the theory part of my thesis, I discuss the history of Sumi-e and what affected it, also where the technique originates from and what has made it to become what it is today. I also studied materials and different equipment as I worked. My aim was to discover the basic ideology and way of thinking in Sumi-e, different methods of making it. The main topic in Sumi-e is life without any greater goal and the state of soul of the artist, the feeling that one is in timeless space on a journey to nowhere. Every landscape, every leaf of bamboo branch that moves in the wind or mountain that reaches for the heights are all presented as they were originally. Western art tries and wants to see nature as a categorized entity where there is no room for spiritual pondering.
The main goal in Sumi-e is to illustrate a simplified and plain state rather than show details or a realistic picture. With the help of bamboo leaves and with the strokes of brushes, I decided to create my spiritual state of depression. In my practice works, I concentrated on the liaison of brush, hand and body. During my practices, I also learned the usage of strokes, lines and ink. Using of my own work opens doors to understanding and observations which teach me essential elements used in the technique.
In Sumi-e, artists combine elements of nature leaving out everything that does not interest them and try to capture their own representation of the true aspect of the object, instead of trying to do as perfect a copy as possible. As I studied the technique, I found out that the meaning of line in Sumi-e is much more important than in Western art
