Tämän opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena on kuvailla vankien kokemuksia isänä olemisesta avovankilassa sekä saada heidän oma äänensä ja omakohtaiset tuntemuksensa kuuluville. Työ toteutettiin laadullisen tutkimuksen menetelmin teemahaastattelemalla kahdeksaa vankia Laukaan avovankilassa. Tulosten tarkastelemiseen käytimme aineistolähtöistä sisällönanalyysia. Isyyttä tarkastelimme neljästä näkökulmasta: vankien kokemukset isyydestä vankeusaikana, vankien oma isäsuhde, vangin suhde lapseen ja lapsen äitiin sekä isänä olemisen tukeminen avovankilassa.
Isyys merkitsee vangeille elämän jatkumista, rakkautta ja kasvatuksellisia asioita. Isänä oleminen koettiin vankilasta käsin haastavaksi, mutta kuitenkin vankilan arjessa voimia antavaksi. Parisuhteessa olevat vangit kokevat huolenaiheena puolisonsa jaksamisen siviilissä yhteisten lasten kanssa. Riitaisan eron kokeneet vangit ovat joutuneet seuraamaan, miten lasten äiti on käyttänyt hyödykseen isän rajallisia mahdollisuuksia vaikuttaa ja asettanut lapset pelinappuloiksi eroprosessissa.
Oman isäsuhteen ongelmat ovat olleet vaikuttamassa vankien elämässä ja ovat osaltaan heijastuneet myös oman isyyden toteuttamiseen. Lapsuuden asiat koettiin vaikeaksi käsitellä tai niistä ei haluttu keskustella syvemmin.
Vankeusrangaistuksen koettiin vaikuttavan lasten elämään, mutta kovin merkittävää vaikutusta sillä ei nähty lapsen kehityksen ja kasvun kannalta. Myöskään ulkopuolista apua asian käsittelyyn lapsen kanssa ei oltu haettu. Avovankilan tukeen isyyden toteuttamisessa ja ylläpitämisessä oltiin pääosin melko tyytyväisiä.

The aim of this thesis is to describe how inmates of an open prison experience fatherhood and to make their voices and personal feelings on the matter heard. The data was procured by a qualitative study in which eight prisoners from the open prison of Laukaa were interviewed on the theme. A content analysis was used to examine the results. Fatherhood was examined from four viewpoints: how the prisoners experienced fatherhood during their imprisonment, the inmates’ relationship with their own father, inmates’ relationship with their child and child’s mother and how fatherhood is supported in an open prison.
Fatherhood to the prisoners means the continuance of life, love and parental issues. Being a father from inside a prison was felt challenging but also as a source of strength in everyday life. Prisoners in relationships are concerned how their spouses manage with the children on their own. Some of the mothers have, after harsh break-ups, taken advantage of the fact that the father has limited opportunities to affect the lives of their children and have made the children pawns in the break-up.
The problems the inmates have had with their own fathers have affected their lives and are reflected in the way the inmates handle fatherhood themselves. The issues the prisoners may have had in their own childhood were considered too hard to process or the prisoners were reluctant to discuss them.
A prison sentence was considered to have an effect on the lives of the children but not seen as something that would have a significant effect on their development and maturing. Neither was there used any external help discussing the issue with the children. The inmates were mainly happy with the support the open prison offered concerning maintaining the relationship with their children.
