Kiinteä oikomiskojehoito asettaa monia haasteita suun terveyden ylläpidolle. Oikomishoitoa tehdään kuitenkin suhteellisen suurelle osalle väestöstä. Hoidon aikana suun puhdistus vaikeutuu. Suuhygienistin rooli on merkittävä ennen hoidon aloitusta, sen aikana ja myös sen jälkeen. Hoidon ja suositusten pitäisi nykyään myös pohjautua tutkittuun näyttöön.
Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli selvittää, mitä preventiivisiä hoitokeinoja oikomishoitoa tekevät suuhygienistit voivat hyödyntää työssään. Tavoitteena oli lisätä suuhygienistien tietoutta ortodontian alalta löytyvistä preventiivisistä hoitokeinoista oikomishoidon potilailla sekä auttaa ehkäisemään oikomishoidon aikana syntyviä ongelmia suuhygieniassa. Tutkimusmenetelmänä käytettiin systemaattista kirjallisuuskatsausta, koska sillä koettiin saatavan parhaimmat vastaukset. Systemaattisen kirjallisuuskatsauksen mukaan vaiheet on kirjoitettu opinnäytetyöhön.
Tutkimuksen tulokset on kirjoitettu yksityiskohtaisesti auki. Niistä selviää hyvin, miten tiettyjä preventiivisiä keinoja on tutkittu ja mitkä ovat tutkimusten tulokset. Tuloksia on myös pohdittu analyysirungon avulla, sekä miten hyvin tulokset vastasivat asetettuja tutkimusongelmia.
Suuhygienistin rooli ennaltaehkäisyssä korostuu entisestään tulevaisuudessa. Siksi on tärkeää, että heidän tietonsa ovat ajan tasalla. Työssä on esitetty myös mahdollisia jatkotutkimusaiheita. Opinnäytetyöstä toivotaan olevan hyötyä suuhygienistiopiskelijoille sekä oikomishoidon parissa työskenteleville suuhygienisteille.Orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances sets many challenges for maintaining good oral health. A relatively big part of the population is getting orthodontic treatment. During the treatment, cleaning the mouth becomes more difficult. The role of the dental hygienist is significant before starting the treatment, during the treatment, and also after the treatment. Orthodontic treatment and the recommendations of how to do it should be based on scientific research.
The purpose of the thesis was to find out what kind of preventive methods can be used by dental hygienists working on the orthodontic field. The aim was to increase dental hygienists’ knowledge of preventive methods in orthodontics that could be used on orthodontic patients. With this knowledge dental hygienists have more resources for preventing problems that may occur during the orthodontic treatment. The research method was systematic literatue review because it seemed to be the best way to gain the relevant answers. The steps of the systematic literatute review are written in the thesis.
The research results are explained in details. The explanations clarify how certain preventive methods have been studied and what are the results of the studies. The analysis frame was used for help in the evaluation of the results. It was also considered how well the results answered to the result problems.
The role of the dental hygienist will be playing an important role in preventive care in the future. For this reason it is important to keep the knowledge up to date. There are possible future research ideas shown in the thesis. Hopefully this thesis will be useful for dental hygiene students but also for the dental hygienist working in orthodontic care
