Tämän opinnäytetyön aiheena oli tutkia yksinhuoltajuutta 1950-luvulla, 1980-luvulla ja 2010-luvulla ja vertailla eroja näiden vuosikymmenten välillä. Tutkimuksessa haettiin vastausta, miten yksinhuoltajuuteen on suhtauduttu ja suhtaudutaan, millainen tukiverkosto yksinhuoltajalla on ja miten hän tulee toimeen.
Tutkimuksen alussa syvennyttiin asiasta kertovaan kirjallisuuteen, tutkimuksiin ja sosiaaliturvan periaatteisiin. Tutkimus toteutettiin teemahaastatteluina edellisiä aihealueita käyttämällä. Haastattelut nauhoitettiin ja litteroitiin ja tuloksia verrattiin teoriaosuuteen. Haastateltavia oli kolme ja jokainen heistä oli kokenut yksinhuoltajuuden eri vuosikymmenellä.
Tutkimuksessa ilmeni, että yksinhuoltajuus on paljon yleisempää nyt kuin ennen. Tutkimuksen tulokset kertovat, että yksinhuoltajien taloudellinen asema on yhä edelleen heikko, mutta suhtautuminen yksinhuoltajuuteen on parantunut. Kuitenkin yksinhuoltajien taloudellinen asema vaatii parannusta. Yksinhuoltajien tärkein tuki on vuosikymmenestä riippumatta usein oma äiti. Nykypäivänä on myös hyväksytympää hakea vertaistukea ja mahdollisuudet siihen ovat paremmat.SOCIAL STATUS AND SUBSISTENCE OF SINGLE-PARENT MOTHER

The purpose of this thesis was to study sole custody in 1950s, in 1980s and in 2010 and compare differences between these decades. Target of this study was to search an answer how sole custody has been comprehended and is comprehended. Also it was studied what kind of support network does single-parent mother have and how she earns her living.
Literature, related studies and principles of social security was analyzed in beginning of this study. Study was executed by interviewing and concentrating on previous themes. Interviews were recorded and transcribed. After this results were compared with theory. There were three interviewees in this study and each of them had experienced sole custody in different decades.
In this study it was noticed that sole custody is much more common nowadays. Result of the study shows that the economic situation of single-parents is still weak but attitude towards sole custody has improved. Nevertheless financial status needs to be improved. Most important support for single parent mother has been and is her own mother despite of decade. Anyhow it can be stated that seeking for support network is more acceptable and possibilities have improved
