Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena on selvittää, mikä on äänikerronnan merkitys radiodokumentissa. Tutkielmassa pohditaan äänimaailman tärkeyttä sekä perinteisessä että nykyaikaisessa radiodokumentissa ja selvitetään, mitä on otettava huomioon, kun rakennetaan radiodokumentin äänikerrontaa. Lopuksi pohditaan onnistuneen äänimaailman vaatimuksia.
Tuoteosana toteutin syksyllä 2009 lyhyen radiodokumentin Reissuradio tekee hanttihommia Lontoossa. Dokumentti on koostettu haastattelusta ja autenttisista äänistä luodusta äänikerronnasta. Äänikerronta kulkee puheen rinnalla, mutta myös omina osuuksinaan. Dokumentissa äänimaailmoille on annettu tilaa ja aikaa.
Tutkielman aineistona on käytetty suomalaisten radiodokumentaristien kirjoittamia kirjoja ja artikkeleita sekä muutamia tutkimuksia. Lisäksi yhtenä lähteenä käytettiin opinnäytetyötä, jonka kirjoittaja oli mukana pioneerikokeilussa kehittämässä nykyaikaista radiodokumentarismia. Tutkielmassa hyödynnetään myös opinnäytetyön tuoteosaa, joka tehtiin alun perin osaksi nykydokumenttiohjelmasarjaa.
Tutkielman alussa esitellään radiodokumentti ohjelmamuotona, taustoitetaan suomalaisen radiodokumentin historiaa ja nykydokumentarismin syntyä. Tämän
jälkeen avataan äänikerronnan käsite ja pohditaan mielikuvien, tehosteiden sekä autenttisten äänten merkitystä radiodokumentissa. Lopuksi esitellään oman dokumentin tekoprosessia ja johtopäätöksiä.
Johtopäätöksenä voidaan todeta, että äänikerronnan merkitys radiodokumentissa on suuri. Äänikerronta toimii varsinkin nykydokumentissa tunnelmanluojana ja tunteiden herättäjänä. Puheella ei tällöin ole yhtä suurta osuutta kuin äänillä. Kuitenkin sopivasti käytettynä puhe auttaa yhdistämään äänet oikeaan ympäristöön.
Äänimaailma on otettava huomioon dokumenttia luotaessa. Nykydokumentit ovat lyhyitä, joten niiden äänimaailmoilla täytyy olla selkeä funktio. Onnistuneen äänikerronnan rakentaminen vaatiikin tiettyjä kriteereitä.

The thesis examines the importance of the sound-narrative and sound-world in the radio documentary. It also studies what needs to be taken into account when making a sound-world for a radio documentary. In conclusion there are some considerations about what it takes to create a successful sound-world.
The practical part of this study consists of the short radio documentary, Reissuradio tekee hanttihommia Lontoossa, which is made in London and consists of London’s sound-world. The documentary is assembled from authentic sounds and created sound-worlds which follow the interviewee’s speaking and also can be heard in their
own sections. There has been given sufficient space for the sound-worlds in the document.
The material for this thesis consists of literature and articles written by Finnish radio documentarians, research studies and a thesis written by a student who participated in a pioneer experiment where radio documentarians were developing modern radio documentary. The practical part has also been used when making conclusions.
In the beginning of the thesis there have been introduced radio documentaries as a part of the radio programmes. Then there is some background information about the
history of Finnish radio documentaries and the arrival of modern radio documentary. Then the concept of sound-narrative and the importance of images and effects in radio documentary have been considered. In the end the process of making a radio documentary is presented along with some conclusions.
In conclusion it can be said that the importance of sound-narrative in the radio documentary is massive. In question is radio which can communicate only through
sounds, so sounds have to be taken into account when creating a radio documentary.
Especially modern radio documents are short so they need a sound-world that has a clear function. Though the sound-narrative has an important function, still the human
voice cannot be forgotten. It helps to place the sound-world into the right context.
