At Washington, Dr. Clarke-Vivier will continue the research shebegan at UNH, pursuing questions of how educators inside andoutside of schools design learning experiences around difficult orcontroversial material. Her dissertation research explored howsecondary educators and museum workers created curriculumaround an art museum installation of modern war photojournalism.This project earned Dr. Clarke-Vivier the Dissertation YearFellowship while at the University of New Hampshire. In collaboration with Dr. Ellie Harrison-Buck in the UNHAnthropology department, Dr. Clarke-Vivier will spend thisupcoming year working with the people of Crooked Tree, Belizeas they prepare to open a public history museum in theircommunity. This museum aims to center the historical and culturallegacies of the Kriol people, decedents from enslaved Africansbrought to the country by Europeans in the 18th and 19th century.In a country where the legacy of British colonialism remains strongand a booming tourism market privileges ancient Maya andcolonial histories, Kriol history remains under-explored in publicAlumni Perspectives: Sara Clarke-Vivier | UNH Todayhttps://www.unh.edu/unhtoday/2017/09/alumni-perspectives-sara-clarke-vivier[7/1/2022 1:50:15 PM]educational spaces, as well as in the national school curriculum.Dr. Clarke-Vivier will support local educators and historians in thedesign and development of exhibit and curriculum materials thatmake this rich history accessible to multiple audiences.
