There are a lot ofthings I didn’t know during my freshman year. Some are silly,others more serious. Let me just say that I have LOVED my timeat UNH. I do not have regrets. I just wish I had figured somethings out sooner rather than later in my college career.For starters:Dining Dollars: You’ve got to use them up before the lastweek of classes because all that’s left to buy at that point isgum and Powerade.Philly is open for “late night.” I didn’t know that for a while.Unsure about nutrition in college? Talk with a NutritionEducator/Counselor at Health Services.Any English majors out there — you can easily double majorin women’s studies if that interests you. I wish I had sat out theremore often than I did.  With regard to studying habits, here are some dos anddon’ts:Definitely do not take energy drinks. They really mess withyou.Avoid all-nighters. Your brain needs sleep so that it canremember information.DO take advantage of coffee, if you like it. I thank coffee formany nights of successful paper writing.Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Your professor is a goodplace to start. And if you need help with your writing, visit theUNH Connors Writing Center.If you’re like me and do not understand the sciences verywell, review your notes within 24 hours of taking them. Thiswill help you avoid panicking before midterms and finals. Take advantage of group fitnessclasses at Campus Recreation. I learned about the spinclass my junior year. It’s a terrific workout and fun to do withother people.I joined the UNH Rowing Team my freshman year andstopped after returning from my fall semester abroad duringjunior year. I realized I wanted to do more with the remainingyear and a half, and rowing just wasn’t for me anymore.While I stopped working out at 5:30 a.m. every day with ateam, I did not stop exercising. It’s important to rememberyou can maintain a healthy and active lifestyle even if youaren’t on a team. Tell your advisor during your freshman yearthat your hope is to go abroad. This way, you can planaccordingly with courses and discovery requirements.You have many options. There are UNH-managed studyabroad programs and UNH-approved study abroadprograms. Basically, there are few limitations on where youcan travel. Get involved early on:I know you’ve probably been hearing this, but I must repeatit: These four years FLY BY. Trust me. As a graduatingsenior, I don’t know where the time went. Therefore, getinvolved early in your college career.I suggest taking freshman year to acquaint yourself withyour university. Attend a lot of student org meetings andvolunteer groups, and get to know your likes and dislikes. CLASSIC.sophomore year, join students orgs and groups that youplan on sticking with until you graduate. This demonstratescommitment and consistent interest. For example, I joinedSandpaper, UNH’s undergraduate creative nonfictionpublication, my sophomore year. I am now the managingeditor of the publication. I learned a lot, and this experience,along with many others, solidified my goal of working in theediting/publishing industry. It’s also OK if you start something your senior year…I interviewed for the wellness blogger position at UNHHealth Services at the end of my junior year. For my entiresenior year I got to write biweekly blogs relating to studentwellness. This was considered an internship, and I evenreceived academic credit for my spring semester, counting itas an English major internship. During this year I picked upblogging as a new skill set, formed great connections andlearned how to operate WordPress, a valuable tool. My pointhere is that it is okay if you wait a little bit to partake ininternships or on-campus jobs. There are many to choosefrom. Find what your interests are, apply and see whathappens! Other thoughts:Go out on randomweekends! Andweeknights! UNH has a lot of eventsand you can find them all on WildcatLink.Always, always, always use student discounts.Make that connection with your professor. Go to officehours.Keep your phone charger on you.Keep a First Aid kit in your dorm room. You never know.Don’t go to class if you are sick. Instead, rest and call HealthServices.Feeling stressed? That’s OK. Talk to a WellnessEducator/Counselor at Health Services.Read Student Health 101, UNH’s health and wellnessmagazine.Try not to skip 8 a.m. classes.Make your dorm room yours; decorate and express yourself!Do not underestimate your workload.Get out of your comfort zone.I can happily say that I’ve learned a lot, grown a lot and am veryready for the next step in life because UNH prepared me well.Take advantage of this beautiful campus and all it has to offeryou. You won’t regret it.
