This article aims to describe the behavior of the female segment in the sector of the Rio Grande do Sul's economy in the 1990, as well as verifying that this segment it has contributed to the elevation of the levels of informality in this economy. Using the informal occupation indicators, adopted from Azevedo (1990) and the data provided by PNAD, it was possible to verify that the participation of women in the PEA of RS was stable during the decade, and did not directly contribute for the elevation of the levels of informality, presenting differentiated characteristics in relation to the male segment.Este artigo tem por objetivo descrever o comportamento do segmento feminino no setor informal da economia gaúcha na década de 1990, bem como verificar se este segmentotem contribuído para a elevação dos níveis de informalidade nesta economia. Utilizando-se dos indicadores de ocupação informal, adotados a partir de Azevedo (1990) e dos dados fornecidos pela PNAD, foi possível verificar que a participação das mulheres na PEA do RS foi estável durante a década, e não contribuiu, diretamente,para a elevação dos níveis de informalidade, apresentando características diferenciadas em relação ao segmento masculino
