ABSTRACT
Objective
Working in manual handling activities requires physical ability especially muscles and bones. Oil palm harvesting was conducted manually and have some risks to cause Musculosceletal disorders (MSDs). This study was aimed to determine the relationship between age, working periode, working posture and mental work load with the occurence of MSDs complaints on oil palm harvesters in PT.Gersindo Minang Plantation district west pasaman, west sumatera province
Method
This research conduct from February until April 2017 using a design cross sectional study. The sample were 65 harvesters from 165 population with simple random sampling technique. Work postures were analyzed using Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) methods, musculoskeletal disorders assessed by Nordic Body Map questionnaire, mental workload assessed by NASA-TLX questionnaire, age and working periode obtained from interviews with respondents.
Result
The result showed 28 harvesters suffered severe MSDs and 37 harvesters suffered milds MSDs. Chi square test result showed that age (p-value:0.000), working period (p-value:0.018), working posture (p-value:0.002) were associated with MSDs complaints. Meanwhile the mental workload statistically unrelated with the MSDs complaints (p-value:1.00).
Conclusion
Age, working periode and working posture were related to MSDs complaints. To minimize the risk of MSDs complaints, the oil palm company expected to do training and education about working posture, manage time of work and the harvesters expected to stretch and rest the muscle during work.
