Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) are part of the group of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), which progressively or in the form of outbreaks affect the patient suffering from it. They are characterized by periods of activity and remission or quiescence and have unknown etiology. The most accepted theory is that they occur as a result of the interaction between the host and the environment, including the intestinal microbiota, the immune system, genetics and specific environmental factors. It is very important the adequate evaluation and the realization of the correct clinical history where all the present symptoms and the severity of them, will allow to classify the disease based on the different scales described and consequently according to severity, extension and presence or absence of complications to decide early on the therapeutic strategy that allows us to achieve remission.La Enfermedad de Crohn (EC) y la Colitis Ulcerosa (CU) forman parte del grupo de enfermedades inflamatorias intestinales (EII), que afectan de manera crónica progresiva o en forma de brotes al paciente que la padece. Se caracterizan por períodos de actividad y de remisión o quiescencia y tienen etiología desconocida. La teoría más aceptada es que se producen como resultado de la interacción entre el huésped y el medio ambiente, incluyendo la microbiota intestinal, el sistema inmunológico, la genética y factores ambientales específicos. Es de suma importancia la evaluación adecuada y la realización de la historia clínica correcta donde se destaquen todos los síntomas presentes y la severidad de los mismos, lo que permitirá clasificar la enfermedad en base a las diferentes escalas descritas y en consecuencia de acuerdo a gravedad, extensión y presencia o no de complicaciones decidir de manera precoz la estrategia terapéutica que nos permita alcanzar la remisión
