JIANRONG WANGINTRODUCTIONIn the winter of 2012, the VALEBibliographic Control and MetadataCommittee (BCMC) conducted a surveyon the national cataloging listservAUTOCAT on the assessment practicesof cataloging departments. One hundredand twenty three libraries responded tothe survey. This poster illustrates thesurvey results and concludes that mostinstitutions are collecting data oncataloging efficiency and quality, but feware assessing the impact of catalogingon institutional success and overall userexperience. To better demonstrate thevalue of cataloging, assessmentpractices need to shift from measuringproduction of catalogers and quality ofindividual MARC fields to measuringimpact on the user and the success ofthe overall institution.
