In some cases a different, more restrictive license may apply; if applicable the terms ofthe restrictive license will be binding.28 hydrolink number 1/2017The gathering of engineers, practitioners, andscientists at the 6th International Symposium onHydraulic Structures (ISHS2016), held inPortland, Oregon June 27-30, 2016, repre-sented a valuable opportunity for knowledgeexchange, perspectives, and networkingregarding critical issues and design perspec-tives related to hydraulic structures. Co-sponsored by IAHR and the U.S. Society onDams, a total of 136 participants attended theevent, representing 18 countries and 5 conti-nents.  The largest delegation came from thehost country (USA) with 94 participants. Expertsfrom practice, research, and implementationwere well represented and included delegatesfrom key U.S. Federal entities U.S. Army Corpsof Engineers, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, U.S.Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, U.S.Department of Agriculture, and the TennesseeValley Authority.  The symposium began with a full-day workshopfocused on stepped spillway hydraulics, team-taught by two leading experts: Prof. Dr. HubertChanson (University of Queensland) and Dr. Sherry Hunt (USDA-ARS). About 40individuals attended this specialty workshop,which emphasized hydrodynamics of steppedspillways, applied research, design, operationalrecords, and group discussions.The symposium also included four notablekeynote speakers. Dr. Anton Schleiss, professorand Director of LCH at EPFL (Switzerland) andcurrent ICOLD president, discussed Interactionof Hydraulic Structures with Air, Water, and Rock – the Challenges of Researchers andDesigners.  Dr. Vijay Singh, professor at TexasA&M, discussed Hydraulic Structures andEntropy-Based Modeling. Philip Burgi (U.S.Bureau of Reclamation-Retired) providedinsights on Challenges in Design and Use ofHydraulic Structures in Response to NewRealities.  Thomas North (U.S. Army Corps ofEngineers) discussed Hydraulic Structures, the Future of Design.The symposium included 13 technical sessionsfeatured 75 presenters, and covered a widerange of topics including: • spillway hydraulics, stepped spillways, 3Dweirs• scour, erosion, and sedimentation• energy dissipation• canals and waterways• coastal structures• operation, maintenance, and dam safety riskassessments• ship locks and spillway gates• dam rehabilitation• fish passage• pressurized flowsA highlight of the technical program alsoincluded the specialty session on large riverbasin management and the role of hydraulicstructures. Three of the most significant riversystems in the US were discussed: theTennessee River System (Keil Neff, TennesseeValley Authority), the Colorado River Basin(Daniel Bunk, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation), andthe Columbia River Basin (Peter Dickerson, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers).The Columbia River Basin represents one of thekey waterways in the US. Dams have been builtalong the river course to improve navigation andgenerate hydropower while preserving naturalresources such as fisheries. Bonneville Lockand Dam is one of the most significant struc-tures on the river and is operated by the U.S.Army Corps of Engineers. A field tour took placeon the last day of the symposium. Participantshad the chance to visit  the Bonneville Lock andDam, including a close-up inspection of thepower house, lock, and fish passage facilities.En route, the field tour stopped at MultnomaFalls, followed by the Bonneville Fish Hatcheryoperated by the Oregon Department of Fishand Wildlife. Daniel B. Bung is a Professorfor Hydraulic Engineering atFH Aachen University ofApplied Sciences, Germany,since 2012. He finished hisstudies in Civil Engineering at BergischeUniversity of Wuppertal, Germany, where hewas also awarded his doctoral degree in2009. In his PhD project, he studied flowproperties of self-aerated stepped spillwayflows by means of experimental work. Hismain research interests are air-water flows,gas transfer, and experimental and numericalmodeling with a focus on hydraulicstructures.W.A.T.E.R.
