A countermeasure with high potential to improve thesustainability and economic use of geothermal plants is theapplication of inhibitors.Geothermal plants in the North German Basin extract highlysaline thermal water from porous aquifers. Flow parameters ofsuch aquifers are sensitive to secondary mineral formation.Mineral deposition near the injection well may decrease theinjectivity. To date no suitable inhibitors are available for areasin Germany with (planned) geothermal use of porous aquifers.In geothermal plants, which extract thermal water fromfractured aquifers - such as in the Upper RhineGraben - commercially available inhibitors are currently usedin testing operation. In the future, the innoxiousness to watermanagement needs to be ensured and the applicability needs tobe extended to lower injection temperatures, in order to enablesustainable and economic long-term operation.An overview over investigations performed within thecollaborative project EIKE, funded by the German FederalMinistry for Economy and Energy is presented. Characterizationof geothermal brines, including gases and particulate matter, aswell as scaling minerals and corrosion products are one scope ofthe project. The final goal is to develop a scale- and corrosioninhibitor combination from common chemical compounds,which is optimized for applications in areas with geothermal useof porous aquifers. Transfer to sites using fractured aquifers isintended. Compared to commercial products, the combination ofpure substances of known composition enables a systematicselection process and targeted studies on the thermal andchemical stability and on the impact of the inhibitor on fluid-rockinteractions.Funding by the German Federal Ministry for Economy andEnergy under grant agreement 03EE4022 is gratefullyacknowledged.
