Thepredominant focus is on the manager's use of information and technology to influence the design, operation and control ofsystems in order to enhance competitive advantage. Topics covered include analysis of current information systems,identification and assessmentof an organization's strategic use of information systemsand trends of informationtechnology development. The course will critically examinethese impacts via case analyses, readings on current topics, and in-depth discussions about the social issues of technologyand the Internet.Description of Graded Activities:Participation in Online Meetings 5%1"1 You will be assessed based on your attendance and whether you participate adequately during the meetings.n During the term, we will have 1Donline meetings (excluding the first, introductory meeting). You will be requiredto attend 8 of these meetings (you'll have the opportunity to select two meetings/case studies to skip). During 4 ofthese meetings, you will be a "case leader", during the other 4, you will be a "case participant".Participation in Discussion Boards 15%[ ,I You will be assessed based on the quantity and quality of your messages. Quality messages will be thoseconsidered insightful, those that provide outside information, or that challenge opinions, that initiate new orrelated topics. Quantity of messages will include both the number of postings and the number of discussion board"hits" (how many postings you read).Case Analyses 25%[III[JYou will conduct eight case analyses during the term. For four of these cases, you will be a "case leader" requiringthe preparation of a 2+ page case analysis to be posted in the digital drop box prior to the online meeting in whichthe case is discussed. Analyses should focus on identifying key issues, researching background information,providing recommendations and updating the case with news and recent facts.For the remaining four cases, you will be a "case participant", requiring the posting in the digital drop box of a 1/2page list of issues and recommendations.Grades will be based on quality of the in·depth case analyses with minor adjustments based on quality of caseparticipant postings.Information Technology (market) Research Study 2D%II~[oJ[ IA 4-5 page single spaced paper examining a research question related to IT. A typical paper might have thefollowing sections: Introduction, Background, Research Questions and Methodology, Findings (or PreliminaryFindings), and Conclusions. Sample research questions might be (there are hundreds of potential relevant topics):What impact does user feedback have on bid prices in Ebay auctions?What role does gender play in responsivenessto email advertising?What is the relative effectiveness of pop-up ads versus banner ads in user recall?What factors do users versus IT departments view as most important in a corporate Intranet?What is the correlation between fear of identity Theft and dollars spent online?To make such analyses, you will need to find relevant articles on your topic (preferably published articles asopposed to just web sites). You'll likely need a minimum of 5·7 references. You will also need to determine aresearch method for answering the question - a survey, interviews, or experiment are the most common choices.You should identify a research method that would provide the best data to answer the research question. In manycases, you will not have the resources or time to actually conduct the full study. If so, your paper will detail howthe study should be conducted then your findings could be based on preliminary data or a pilot study (say, a groupof 2D students who participate in your survey). More details about the paper will be provided later in the course.CEO/CIO Interviews: 10%[ I Interview your CEO (or a key manager in your organization) and your CIO (or key Information Systems official in yourorganization) regarding the strategic importance of IT in their organization. Solicit their opinions by asking them tostrongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree, or strongly disagree with the following statements:~' Information Technology is very important to the strategic success of our organizationOur use of IT helps differentiate us from our competitors. I Most of our investments in IT have resulted in positive return on investment. In examining new information systems, we typically seek to purchase solutions rather than develop thl.' Finally, include your personal reaction to this assignment in your report. This will be 3·4 slword-processed papers.Note: if you are unable to conduct such an interview (full time student, very small organization, etc,)request to have the points for this assignment added to the research paper (with a proportionate incnand quality expected)rl An exam will be posted in Blackboard before the end of the course. Awindow of time will be given forstudents to take the exam. Students will log onto Blackboard and follow the link to the exam. Exams willbe "open book" but they will also be time.d (you may have only 2-3 hours to complete the exam). sostudents must be organized and prepared. Exams will primarily cover weekly readings (those that precedeeach case). While the exam will not explicitly refer to facts in case studies, students may wish to useincidents in the cases to illustrate their answers. BLackboard's exam feature is relativeLy easy to use.However, it is very important that you complete the exam in one sessionwithout closing your browser orallowing your Internet connection to time-out. You do not have to come to class to take the exam, it maybe taken from home. work, or a computer on campus.
