CONTACT HOURS PER SEMESTER:    Lecture Hours:  48 (Thursdays, 10:00 A.M.-1:00 P.M.) -some hours may be on line, independent study and some will be at Warm Springs). COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course presents principles and practices related to the holistic nursing care of individuals and families across the lifespan.  The course focuses on the continued development of the nursing process to address psychosocial needs.  Concepts include the nurse-patient partnership, EBP (evidenced based practice), Recovery Model, and nursing therapies related to treatment.  PROGRAM OUTCOMES:  The expected ASN Program outcomes of human flourishing, nursing judgments, and professional identity and spirit inquiry are based on the expectations of the Associate Nurse core competencies as described by the National League of Nursing and QSEN.   EXPECTED STUDENT COURSE OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES:  Upon completion of this course, the student will be expected to:   1.  Promote a Human Flourishing environment characterized by advocating for a patient/family partnership that promotes self -determination, integrity and ongoing growth through incorporating knowledge from nursing and science/recovery theories across health care settings. • Function as advocate for client and family members as related to mental health issues. • Demonstrate and provide caring, protective and dignified care to psychiatric clients across the lifespan with respect to values, customs and habits.  2.  Understand rationale for Nursing Judgments by utilizing critical thinking within the nursing process thus providing safe, quality, holistic, patient-centered care and advocacy for diverse patient populations.  • Demonstrate and provide evidence-based or best practice to support clinical decision-making in the role of the ASN.  • Demonstrate an accurate, comprehensive physical, psychosocial, and functional nursing assessment of Psychiatric-Mental Health clients with demonstrated ability to evaluate outcomes and respond within the scope of the ASN. • Apply the nursing process as a dynamic tool to assist in meeting the psychosocial needs of patients and families.  3.  Demonstrate Professional Identity characterized by practice according to current ethical and legal standards of professional nursing in ways that reflect patient centered care, caring, diversity, integrity and holism.  • Integrate nursing care within the framework of legal, ethical and regulatory requirements. • Provide culturally congruent client care, with regard to ethnicity, race and diversity, in the meeting of client’s psychosocial needs.  4.  In Spirit of Inquiry, function and lead effectively within nursing and inter- professional teams, fostering open communication, mutual respect and shared decision making to achieve quality patient care.   • Functions effectively as a team leader/member of the interdisciplinary team for the psychiatric patient across the life span. • Demonstrate effective communication methods to ensure relevant, complete and accurate reporting methods to members of the interdisciplinary mental health team.  COURSE POLICIES AND COURSE:   Policies related to attendance, tardiness, class participation, missed  examinations or assignments, academic dishonesty, grading, Grade Appeal Procedure, and support services are included in the Nursing Student Handbook. 1. Students are expected to make a proactive, consistent, active, and responsible effort to attend all clinical experiences as part of their professional behavior development.             3.  All e-mail correspondence must be made through “MSO”        Attendance Policy Regular attendance is expected.    Lack of attendance may adversely affect final grades.    Tests are to be taken on the day scheduled, or submitted by the announced due date.  Late assignments will only be accepted if the student notifies the instructor before the due date.  An assignment that is more than 24 hours late, regardless of prior notification, will have a 10% reduction to the final grade for that assignment.   Students are required to complete all clinical hours which includes clinical lab. Less than 32 hours of clinical will result in failure of the clinical portion of the class.       Academic Integrity All students must practice academic honesty.  Academic misconduct, including plagiarism and classroom misconduct is subject to an academic penalty by the course instructor(s) and/or a disciplinary sanction by the University.  All students need to be familiar with the Student Conduct Code.  The code is available for review on line at http://www.umt.edu/vpsa/studentconduct.php    Cell Phones/Pagers/I pods:  If the cell phone/pager is not emergency related, turn them off.  If the cell phone interferes with the process of the class, you may be asked to leave.  If there is a reason to keep your cell phone active, place on vibrate.   If you receive an emergency call, please leave the classroom quietly to take the message.  Cell phones, IPads (and other tablets) and pagers must be turned off during exams.  In class or on line assignments/take home exams are expected to be turned in on time, which is defined as the first 10 minutes following the start time of class, on the day it is due.  Moodle tracks the time an assignment was turned in and how late it is.  Late work will not be accepted unless it is an emergency or extenuating circumstance that has been preapproved by the instructor.  Frequent requests for course work extensions will affect your professionalism grade. If a student breaks this policy, it will be considered academic misconduct.  ****All written assignments must be typed unless otherwise noted   GRADING CRITERIA: Successful completion of this course requires a minimum of 80% in the classroom and completion of a passing clinical grade as follows:                           Grading Scale 90-100%-A 80-89%-B 70-79%-C 60-69%-D Below 60 %–F  Breakdown of Clinical Grade • 2 clinical data sheets • 2 community support group summary • co-leader for patient education group at Warm Springs •  clinical practice evaluation   Grading Scale Exceptional– Satisfactory-Unsatisfactory  Successful completion of this course requires a minimum of an 80% (B). Both the classroom and the clinical components of the course must be successfully completed in order to pass the class; therefore, you must receive at least 80 points and an “Acceptable” clinical grade to pass the course.  COURSE ASSESSMENT METHODS  1. Advisory committee input relative to expectations of employers for entry-level skills. 2.  Collaboration between classroom and clinical instructors to maintain clinical currency      in theory classes. 3.  Performance on NCLEX-PN by graduates. 4.  Student course evaluations each semester. 5.  NCLEX mock licensure exam results 6.  Assessment of student clinical performance.
