PHAR 310: Pharmacy Practice II Spring 2014 M F 11:10 a.m. - 12:00 noon CP212   Course Description:  The second in a series of Pharmacy Practice courses, this course is designed to complete the introduction to pharmacy law and to introduce the student to the expanding role of the pharmacist in today’s rapidly changing healthcare environment. Reiss and Gary D. Hall   Montana State law booklet   i-Clicker    Clinical Pharmacology at www.goldstandard.com  Recommended  Resources:  Lexicomp’s Drug Information Handbook, 21st edition      Goal: The goal of this course is to introduce the student to the profession of pharmacy.  Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:  Differentiate among various types of adverse drug events.  Counsel patients on ways to manage adverse drug events.  State the mechanisms of drug-drug, drug-food interactions and how they can be managed.  Describe what types of errors are made in pharmacies, the causes of those errors and how to use a quality assurance program to prevent errors.  Complete necessary reporting forms (ADRs, errors, etc.).  Given a health care profession, state the relationship between that profession and pharmacy.  Describe the current and potential roles of pharmacists in the healthcare system.                Interview an older adult about his or her use of nonprescription and alternative health care. Each student will participate in an interview of a senior citizen. 2. Each student will complete a career planning exercise on a pharmacy career of choice.  All assignments are required and are due at the BEGINNING of class.  Any late assignment will be  graded for half credit.    Grading: The final grade in this course will be based on your performance in the following:  Categories:                            Points    Midterm quiz                      50       Unscheduled quizzes            up to 25 Intergenerational service learning interview       50     Career planning exercise         50  Attendance/Participation         25         TOTAL    up to 200  Scheduled quiz:  There will be one graded lecture quiz as listed on the test schedule.  This may test material from any class (yes, this includes your other PHAR courses).  Unscheduled quizzes:  These will be randomly distributed throughout the term and will range in point value.  Some will count toward your overall score and some will be extra credit. i-clicker: Various classroom responses using the i-clicker system.  Some questions will be used to get a feeling for your grasp of the material.  Some questions will be actual quiz questions.  And, yes, sometimes we are just taking roll.    Grading scale: 92% and above is an A From 84% to 91% is a B From 76% to 83% is a C  The course coordinators may adjust the grading scale and points assigned for any activity.    Attendance Policy: Students are EXPECTED to attend every class session, actively participate in class discussions and perform satisfactorily on all assignments and examinations.  Students unable to attend a particular session must contact the instructor.  Please refer and adhere to the student conduct code regarding classroom behavior  Academic Honesty: All students must practice academic honesty. Academic misconduct is subject to an academic penalty by the course instructor and/or a disciplinary sanction by the University.   All students need to be familiar with the Student Conduct Code. The Code is available for review online at http://life.umt.edu/vpsa/student_conduct.php  Professionalism:  Pharmacy 310 is a professional practice course.  Course faculty strive to create a positive educational environment for all students.  Students are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times.  Professionalism includes being respectful of your fellow students, faculty and any guest speakers.  It also includes coming to class prepared and ON TIME.  Policy regarding cell phones and testing conditions:  All electronic devices, including cell phones, must be turned off during lectures, labs and during examinations.  The wearing of beaked caps is prohibited during quizzes and exams.    1/27/2014
