MESSAGE OF THE INCOMING PRESIDENTTo the Members of the Den-ver Bar Association:The editor has requested"a brief statement announc-ing acceptance of the officeand policies."I accept the office.It has been said thatlawyers do not take as prom-inent a part in matters affect-ing the general public asformerly. If the statementbe true, lawyers are shirkingan obligation. Science teachesus that progress is achievedthrough change, that changeis one 'of the basic laws ofnature. History discloses that,in general, change in munici-.pal and governmental mattersis most beneficent when nor-mal, gradual, and thoughtful.The lawyer, by training andexperience, is peculiarly wellfitted to be of assistance inand to counsel wisely uponROBERT E. MORE matters of this nature whenrestiveness, an awareness ofcertain limitations in our existing social structure, and often actual wantprompt the proposal of too hasty and drastic innovations. It is myhope that the lawyers of Denver may lend more and more assistance ina non-polirical way, upon matters affecting the public, both municipaland state. If Denver lawyers are to assist in these public matters, activ-ities should be group, rather than individual ones.But the Denver Bar Association cannot function efficiently unlessits work is the effort of the entire Association, rather than that of itsofficers and committees alone. Existing members become indifferent,and new members cannot be secured unless the meetings of the Asso-ciai'on continue to be interesting and instructive. For us as lawyers,law and its related subjects are, in general, our vocations and avocations.The incoming administration will endeavor to make every meetingone that lawyers will wish to attend. This can be accomplished, aswas proved by Mr. Blount, by selecting informed speakers and topicsof interest to Denver lawyers. If the speakers thus selected develop con-cisely their topics, the meetings will be interesting to the members. Ifthe activities of the Association also recognize the importance of publicservice the Association will more completely play its part in our com-munity life. ROBERT E. MORE.220
