Graphic Medicine and Critical Librarianship

Abstract

Graphic medicine, the intersection of comics and healthcare, emerged in the last decade and serves a variety of functions, including teaching the general public and future healthcare providers, assisting patient-provider communication about difficult topics, and building community and empathy for both providers and patients. The field contains providers, patients, artists, educators, and academics who collaborate to create, disseminate, and utilize graphic medicine materials. Health science librarians support graphic medicine initiatives at their institutions as collectors and educators
