Orientalism, Visual Traces and its Effects on the Contemporary Art of Photography

Abstract

Geçmişi Haçlı Seferlerine dayanan Oryantalizm, 'Doğu'yu tanımak, anlamak amacı ile 'Batılı' araştırmacılar tarafından yapılançok yönlü bilimsel çalışmaların adıdır. Uzun zaman süreçlerinde ve düzenli olarak doğuya ait toplanan her türlü görsel veyazılı metin dilbilim, sosyoloji, etnografi, arkeoloji, siyaset bilim vb. araştırmalara kaynak teşkil etmiştir. Çalışma kapsamında,oryantalizmin görsel boyutu ve günümüz fotoğrafına etkisi sorgulanmıştır. Alt yapı Oryantalizm'in tarihsel gelişim süreci veTürklerle olan ilişkisi saptanarak kurulmuştur. Oryantalizmin resim ve fotoğraf sanatına olan etkisini belirlemek amacı ilegezgin ressamların ve fotoğrafçıların 19. yüzyılın son çeyreği ve 20. yüzyıl başında Osmanlı İmparatorluğu topraklarındaürettikleri eserler taranmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda, gerçekliği olduğu gibi yansıtan resim ve fotoğrafların yanı sıra, özellikleharem hayatını tasvir eden, biçim ve içerik bakımından hayali, fantezilere hitap eden eserler de belirlenmiştir. Harem hayatınailişkin klişelerle bezeli resim ve fotoğraflar, sanat gündeminde oryantalist bakış açısını temsil etmektedirler. Bu görselşablonlar çağdaş fotoğraf sanatında, postmodernizm kapsamında, yeniden yorumlanmakta ve tekrarlanmaktadırlar. Orientalism, which has its origins from the Crusades, is the name of multi-faceted scientific studies conducted by Westernresearchers to recognize and understand the East. Collected on a regular basis, all kinds of visual and written texts relatingto the East have constituted source for linguistics, sociology, ethnography, archeology, political science studies. In theextend of this study, the visual dimension of orientalism and its effect to contemporary photography is questioned. Thestructure of this paper is established by determining the historical development of orientalism and its relationship withthe Turks. In order to indicate the effect of orientalism on painting and photography, the works of traveller painters andphotographers which were produced within the Ottoman realm around the last quarter of the nineteeth and the beginningof the twentieth centuries are examined. As a result of this research, along with the pictures and photographs reflectingthe reality, other works especially illustrating the harem life and imaginary in terms of its content that appeal fantasieshave been identified as well. Pictures and photographs, covered with clichés related to harem life, are representing theorientalist point of view in artistic context. In contemporary art of photography, these visual templates are beingre-annotated and reduplicated within the scope of of post-modernism
