A Watered-Down Topographic Map

Abstract

In this activity, students will learn how topographic maps are created and investigate the differences between topographic maps and bathymetric charts. They will understand how a two-dimensional map can show both the vertical and the horizontal shape of three-dimensional land surface or ocean bottom. During this activity, students will create their own maps from a model land form, interpret a simple topographic map, and explain the differences between topographic and bathymetric maps.
